Փետրվարի 5-ին լրանում է Ռուսաստանի և ԱՄՆ-ի միջև միջուկային զինանոցների փոխադարձ վերահսկողության վերաբերյալ վերջին համաձայնագրի՝ «Ռազմավարական հարձակողական զենքի հետագա կրճատման և սահմանափակման միջոցառումների մասին» պայմանագրի ժամկետը (New START):

Ըստ Գիտնականների ամերիկյան ֆեդերացիայի գնահատականների՝ ԱՄՆ-ին և ՌԴ-ին է պատկանում աշխարհի միջուկային զենքի մոտ 86%-ը, հաղորդում է DW-ն: Սակայն, New START-ի ժամկետի լրանալուց հետո, գրեթե 40 տարվա ընթացքում առաջին անգամ, Վաշինգտոնն ու Մոսկվան այլևս մեխանիզմ չեն ունենա նոր սպառազինությունների մրցավազքը կանխելու համար:

Ռուսաստանը և ԱՄՆ-ն New START-ը ստորագրել են ավելի քան 15 տարի առաջ՝ Կրեմլի և Սպիտակ տան միջև ջերմացող հարաբերությունների և ԱՄՆ-Ռուսաստան հարաբերություններում «վերագործարկման» քաղաքականության համատեքստում: Պայմանագրի ժամկետը պաշտոնապես լրացել է 2021 թվականին, բայց Վլադիմիր Պուտինը և այն ժամանակվա ԱՄՆ նախագահ Ջո Բայդենը, հակառակ շատ վերլուծաբանների մտահոգությունների, օգտվել են պայմանագրի մեկանգամյա հնգամյա երկարաձգման հնարավորությունից:

Նոր START-ի եզակի առանձնահատկությունն այն է, որ համաձայնագիրը չի նախատեսում բազմակի երկարաձգումներ: Այնուամենայնիվ, նրանում կարող է ներառվել լրացում, որը բազմակի երկարաձգումների հնարավորություն կտա:
