Աֆրիկայի բնակչության մոտ 20%-ը, կամ ավելի քան 300 միլիոն մարդ, զրկված է մաքուր և անվտանգ խմելու ջրից։ Իրավիճակի մասին Ադիս Աբեբայում Աֆրիկյան միության գործադիր խորհրդի 48-րդ նստաշրջանի բացման ժամանակ հայտարարել է ՄԱԿ-ի գլխավոր քարտուղարի տեղակալ և ՄԱԿ-ի Աֆրիկայի տնտեսական հանձնաժողովի գործադիր քարտուղար Քլավեր Գատետեն։ Նրա ելույթը հեռարձակվել է կազմակերպության կայքում։
Անդրադառնալով Աֆրիկյան միության տարվա թեմային՝ ապահովել ջրի և անվտանգ սանիտարիայի կայուն հասանելիություն՝ 2063 թվականի օրակարգի նպատակներին հասնելու համար, նա նշել է, որ «ջուրը և սանիտարական պայմանները ոչ միայն սոցիալական ծառայություններ են, այլև տնտեսական ենթակառուցվածքներ»։
«Սակայն ամբողջ Աֆրիկայում ավելի քան 300 միլիոն մարդ դեռևս զրկված է անվտանգ խմելու ջրից, իսկ մոտավորապես 780 միլիոնը՝ բավարար սանիտարական պայմաններից,- նշել է ՄԱԿ-ի գլխավոր քարտուղարի տեղակալը։ -Ջրին առնչվող հիվանդությունները, մասնավորապես՝ խոլերան, լուծը և որովայնային տիֆը, շարունակում են կյանքեր խլել ամբողջ մայրցամաքում»: Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպության տվյալներով՝ Աֆրիկայի տարածաշրջանում կանխարգելելի հիվանդություններից ամեն ժամ մահանում է մոտավորապես 115 մարդ: Դրա տնտեսական հետևանքները չափազանց նշանակալի են։
«Վատ ջրամատակարարումը և սանիտարական պայմանները ևս նվազեցնում են արտադրողականությունը, մեծացնում առողջապահության ծախսերը և խոչընդոտում ներդրումներին,- հավելել է նա: -Գործարանները պահանջում են հուսալի ջրամատակարարում, գյուղատնտեսական ձեռնարկությունները՝ ոռոգում, իսկ քաղաքները՝ սանիտարական համակարգեր՝ արդյունավետ գործելու համար: Առանց հուսալի ջրային համակարգերի արդյունաբերական գոտիները չեն կարող մրցունակ մնալ, լոգիստիկ կենտրոնները չեն կարող արդյունավետորեն ընդլայնվել, իսկ քաղաքային տնտեսությունները չեն կարողանում կայուն զարգանալ»:
