Իսրայելի վարչապետ Բենիմանին Նեթանյահուն հայտարարել է՝  «կան բազմաթիվ նշաններ», որ Իրանի գերագույն առաջնորդն «այլևս մեզ հետ չէ»։ Այս մասին գրում է CNN-ն ու հավելում, որ Իսրայելի վարչապետը միաժամանակ չի ասել, որ Իրանի գերագույն առաջնորդը սպանվել է։

Հիշեցնենք, որ Իրանի արտաքին գործերի նախարար Աբբաս Արաղչին ավելի վաղ NBC-ին ասել էր, որքանով տեղյակ է՝ Այաթոլլա Ալի Խամենեին և Իրանի այլ բարձրաստիճան պաշտոնյաներ ողջ  են։

Իրանն այսօր առավոտյան հարվածների սկսվելուց ի վեր Խամենեիից տեսանյութը չի հրապարակել։ CNN-ը նախկինում հաղորդել էր, որ Խամենեին Իրանի վրա հարվածների առաջին համազարկի թիրախներից մեկն էր՝ այլ բարձրաստիճան առաջնորդների հետ միասին, սակայն իսրայելական աղբյուրները հայտնել են, որ Խամենեիի սպանության հաստատում չկա։

«Կան բազմաթիվ նշաններ, որ այս բռնակալը այլևս մեզ հետ չէ», - ասել է Նեթանյահուն՝ հավելելով, որ Իսրայելը ոչնչացրել է նրա ամրոցը։ Նեթանյահուն նաև ասել է, որ Իրանի դեմ գործողությունը պահանջում է «համբերություն» և «կտևի այնքան, որքան անհրաժեշտ է»։ «Այս պատերազմը կհանգեցնի իրական խաղաղության»։

Տարբեր աղբյուրների համաձայն, ամերիկաիսրայելական հարձակումների հետևանքով մահացել են Իրանի գերագույն առաջնորդի հարսը և փեսան։  Հարսը՝ Զահրա Հադադադելը Մոջթաբա Խամենեիի կինն է։ Մոջթաբա Խամենեիի ճակատագիրը հայտնի չէ։ Նա ապագա գերագույն առաջնորդի թեկնածուներից կարող էր լինել։  

«Իրանն այսօր» հարթակն ավելի վաղ ներկայացրել էր, թե ինչպես են Իրանում ընտրում գերագույն առաջնորդին։

Առաջնորդի ընտրության համար կա հատուկ մարմին՝ Փորձագետների խորհուրդը։ Այն կազմված է 88 հոգևորականից (մուջթահիդներից)։ Նրանք ոչ միայն ընտրում են առաջնորդին, այլև իրավունք ունեն վերահսկելու նրա գործունեությունը և նույնիսկ պաշտոնանկ անելու նրան, եթե նա այլևս ի վիճակի չէ կատարել իր պարտականությունները:

Փորձագետների խորհրդի անդամներին ընտրում է ժողովուրդը՝ ութ տարի ժամկետով։ Առաջադրվածների թեկնածությունը հաստատում է Պահապանների խորհուրդը։  (Իսկ Պահապանների խորհրդի անդամների կեսին նշանակում է Գերագույն առաջնորդը, մյուս կեսին՝ դատական համակարգի ղեկավարը, որին նույնպես նշանակում է  առաջնորդը)։

Խորհրդի կազմում գործում է հանձնաժողով, որը հավանական թեկնածուների ցուցակ է կազմում։ Երբ գործող գերագույն առաջնորդը մահանում է կամ հրաժարական տալիս, Փորձագետների խորհուրդը հրավիրում է արտահերթ նիստ, որի ընթացքում էլ անցկացվում է փակ քվեարկություն։ Առաջնորդ է ընտրվում այն թեկնածուն, որը ստանում է խորհրդի անդամների ձայների ⅔-ը։ 

Իրանի հաջորդ գերագույն առաջնորդի ամենահավանական թեկնածուն էր համարվում նախկին նախագահ Էբրահիմ Ռայիսին, բայց նա մահացավ ուղղաթիռի վթարի հետևանքով։ Մյուս շրջանառվող անունը՝ Մոջթաբա Խամենեին էր՝ գործող առաջնորդ Ալի Խամենեիի որդին։
