Երկրորդ երեխայի սպասելը ուղեկցվում է ուղեղի ֆունկցիայի նկատելի փոփոխություններով։ Այս եզրակացությանն են հանգել հոլանդացի նյարդաբանները, ովքեր ուսումնասիրել են, թե ինչպես են փոխվում նյարդային գործընթացները կանանց մոտ երկրորդ հղիության ընթացքում։
Հետազոտությանը մասնակցել է 110 կին։ Նրանք բաժանվել են երեք խմբի. ոմանք սպասում էին իրենց առաջնեկին, մյուսները՝ երկրորդին, իսկ երրորդ խումբը կազմված էր երեխաներ չունեցող կանանցից , ովքեր դիտարկման պահին հղի չէին։ Այս խմբերի համեմատությունը թույլ տվեց մեզ հետևել ուղեղի զարգացմանը մայրության տարբեր փուլերում։
Վերլուծությունը ցույց տվեց, որ ամենաակնառու փոփոխությունները տեղի են ունենում առաջին հղիության ընթացքում: Այս ժամանակահատվածում ուղեղի այն հատվածները, որոնք կապված են ինքնաճանաչման, սոցիալական փոխազդեցության և ուրիշների հույզերի ճանաչման հետ, ենթարկվում են զգալի փոփոխությունների: Հետազոտողների կարծիքով, այս փոփոխությունները օգնում են ապագա մորը հուզական կապ հաստատել իր երեխայի հետ և ավելի հեշտությամբ հարմարվել կյանքում իր նոր դերին:
Երկրորդ հղիության ընթացքում նույնպես նկատվում են նմանատիպ գործընթացներ, սակայն դրանց ծանրությունը պակաս արտահայտված է: Այնուամենայնիվ, ավելի նկատելի տեղաշարժեր են տեղի ունենում այլ նյարդային համակարգերում: Մասնավորապես, ուշադրության, զգայական տեղեկատվության մշակման և արտաքին խթաններին արձագանքի համար պատասխանատու ցանցերը ենթարկվում են ավելի ակտիվ վերակառուցման:
Հետազոտողները ենթադրում են, որ այս վերակառուցումը կարող է կապված լինել ուղեղի նոր խնդրի հետ՝ ուշադրության բաշխմանը մի քանի երեխաների միջև: Մինչդեռ մոր դերն ինքնին ձևավորվում է առաջին հղիության ընթացքում, հետագա հղիությունների ընթացքում նյարդային համակարգերը, հավանաբար, հարմարվում են մի քանի երեխաների խնամքին:
Արդյունքները կարող են օգնել ավելի լավ հասկանալ հետծննդյան դեպրեսիայի մեխանիզմները և բարելավել կանանց աջակցությունը ծննդաբերությունից հետո ապագայում։
