Մարտի 21-ը նշվում է Դաունի համախտանիշի համաշխարհային օր։ Այս օրը ընտրված է խորհրդանշական կերպով՝ կապված 21-րդ քրոմոսոմի եռակի առկայության հետ, որը հենց Դաունի համախտանիշի հիմնական գենետիկ պատճառն է։
Յուրաքանչյուր 700 նորածնից 1-ը ծնվում է Դաունի համախտանիշով։ Դաունի համախտանիշ ունեցող մարդիկ ունեն յուրահատուկ բնավորություն, տաղանդներ և հետաքրքրություններ։ Շատերը սովորում են, աշխատում և ակտիվ մասնակցում հասարակական կյանքին։
Եթե նախկինում նրանց կյանքը շատ կարճ էր, այսօր բժշկության զարգացման հետ նրանք կարող են ապրել մինչև 60–70 տարի և ավելին։
