«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Ռոմ և շաքարեղեգի վրա հիմնված այլ ըմպելիքներ ներկայում արտադրվում են շատ երկրներում, և նույնիսկ այն երկրներում, որտեղ շաքարեղեգ չի աճում։ Սակայն Կարիբյան ավազանի երկրները եղել և մնում են իսկական ռոմի հայրենիքը։ Եվ եթե այդ ալկոհոլը ծնվել է Բարբադոսում, մեծացել է Ջամայկայում, իր երիտասարդությունն ապրել է Մարտինիկայում, ապա հենց Կուբայում է դարձել այն խմիչքը, որին մենք բոլորս հիմա ծանոթ ենք: Հենց այնտեղ էլ տեղի է ունեցել այդ էժան ալկոհոլային խմիչքի վերածումը աշխարհի ամենահայտնի թունդ ըմպելիքներից մեկի։ Եվ հենց այնտեղ էլ այսօր արտադրվում է ամենաօրիգինալ ռոմը։

Երկար տարիներ Կուբան, չնայած եղեգնուտների տնկարկների իր մեծ տարածքներին, ռոմի խոշոր արտադրող չի եղել: Իրավիճակն սկսվել է փոխվել միայն 19-րդ դարի սկզբին։ Քսան տարուց պակաս ժամանակահատվածում ռոմի արտադրության ծավալներն աճել են 20 անգամ։ Այնուամենայնիվ, կուբայական ռոմը դեռևս մեծ համբավ չի ունեցել, քանի որ այն շատ ցածր որակի խմիչք էր և զիջում էր մոտակա այլ կղզիների ռոմերին: Նույնիսկ 19-րդ դարի կեսերին այդ թունդ ալկոհոլի ամենահայտնի տեսակները Ջամայկայից, Բարբադոսից և Գայանայից էին:

Իրավիճակն սկսել է փոխվել այն բանից հետո, երբ Էնեաս Քոֆին հայտնագործել է շարունակական թորիչը: Այդ սարքը ամենամեծ ժողովրդականությունն է ձեռք բերել Կուբայում։ Հենց այդ գյուտի շնորհիվ կուբայական ռոմը կարողացել է գերազանցել իր մրցակիցներին։ 1860 թվականին կուբացի արտադրողներից մեկին հաջողվել է ստեղծել ռոմի նոր տեսակ՝ բաց գույնով, թեթև ու հաճելի բուրմունքով: Դրանից հետո շատ թորողներ հաջողել են նմանատիպ ըմպելիք արտադրել։ Իսկ 1862 թվականին ծնվել է թունդ սպիրտ արտադրելու կուբայական ավանդույթների մարմնացումը՝ Վարաբիերո ռոմը։ Այնուամենայնիվ, մինչ Կուբայի հեղափոխությունն այդ արտադրանքը չէր առանձնանում նույն շարքի շատ այլ ըմպելիքներից:

Վարաբիերո ռոմը յուրահատուկ է դարձել միայն Կուբայի հեղափոխությունից հետո, երբ ռոմի որոշ գործարաններ փակվել են, մյուսները պետականացվել, և նրանց տերերը ստիպված են եղել փախչել: Սակայն Կուբայում բավական թվով մասնագետներ են մնացել, ովքեր կարողացել են պահպանել թեթև ռոմի թորման ավանդույթը։ ԱՄՆ-ի կազմակերպած տնտեսական շրջափակումը հնարավորություն է տվել խուսափել գլոբալացումից։ Արդյունքում, նույնիսկ այսօր Վարաբիերո ռոմը չի կարելի շփոթել այլ ռոմերի հետ, քանի որ այն պահպանել է իր յուրահատկությունը։ Ամերիկացիներն, ի դեպ, դեռ հնարավորություն չունեն վայելելու այդ ավանդական ըմպելիքը, բայց մնացած աշխարհում այն վաճառվում է ավելի քան հաջող։
