Բրիտանական Կոլումբիայի համալսարանի գիտնականների միջազգային խումբը պարզել է, որ մոլորակի միջին լայնություններում ամառային սեզոնը արագորեն երկարում է, սեզոնային անցումները դառնում են ավելի ու ավելի կտրուկ: Հետազոտությունը հրապարակվել է Environmental Research Letters ամսագրում և հիմնված է 1961-ից 2024 թվականների տվյալների վերլուծության վրա։

1990 թվականից ի վեր ամառը տասնամյակում միջինում երկարել է 5-7 օրով, և 2020-ականների կեսերին ամառային պայմանները տևում են մոտավորապես 30 օրով ավելի երկար, քան 1960-ականներին: Սա գրեթե երկու անգամ ավելի արագ է, քան նախկինում գրանցված 4 օր տասնամյակում: Այս միտումը տարածվում է ոչ միայն ցամաքի, այլև ափամերձ գոտիների և օվկիանոսների վրա, որոշ քաղաքներում, ինչպիսիք են Սիդնեյը և Մինեապոլիսը, ամառները տարեկան ավելի քան մեկ օրով երկարում են:

Հետազոտողները նաև պարզել են, որ ջերմաստիճանն ավելի արագ է փոխվում՝ ինչպես ամռան սկզբի, այնպես էլ ավարտի փուլերում, իսկ գարնանից ամառ և ամառից աշուն սեզոնային անցումները դառնում են ավելի կտրուկ: Սա էկոհամակարգերին և մարդկային գործունեությանը ավելի քիչ ժամանակ է թողնում հարմարվելու համար:

Հյուսիսային կիսագնդի համար կուտակված ամառային ջերմությունը 1990 թվականից ի վեր աճում է 44°C•օրով տասնամյակում, ինչը ավելի քան երեք անգամ արագ է, քան 1961-1990 թվականների արժեքը, երբ այդ ցուցանիշը կազմել է 14°C•օրեր տասնամյակում։ Այս աճը ոչ գծային է՝ ամռան տևողության և ջերմաստիճանի միաժամանակյա աճի պատճառով։

Տարածաշրջանային տարբերությունները առավելի նշանակալի են։ Տոկիոյում ամառը տասնամյակում ավելացնում է 2.1 օր, Փարիզում՝ 7.1 օր, Սիդնեյում՝ 14.8 օր, իսկ Մինեապոլիսում՝ 9.3 օր։ Օվկիանոսներն այժմ ցույց են տալիս ամռան երկարացման նույն տեմպը, ինչ ցամաքը։

Գիտնականները զգուշացնում են, որ ամառային ջերմության կուտակման աճը կարող է խնդիրներ ստեղծել մարդու ֆիզիոլոգիական հարմարվողականության համար և հանգեցնել էներգիայի սպառման աճի՝ տարածքների սառեցման նպատակով թե՛ ցերեկային, թե՛ գիշերային ժամերին։ Ավելի կտրուկ սեզոնային անցումները կարող են հանգեցնել ձյան վաղ հալքի, ջրհեղեղների և ավելի մահացու ջերմային ալիքների։
