Լիտվայում աղքատության մակարդակն աճել է, հատկապես ավելի հեռավոր շրջաններում, և որոշ համայնքներում յուրաքանչյուր երրորդ բնակիչն ապրում է աղքատության շեմից ցածր, հաղորդում է LRT-ն։

Լիտվայում գրեթե 700 000 մարդ ապրում է աղքատության շեմից ցածր։ Բարեգործական Maisto Bankas կազմակերպությունը աջակցություն է տրամադրում երկրի շուրջ 232 000 բնակչի։

Սոցիալական ապահովության և աշխատանքի նախարարության տվյալներով, սահմանամերձ շրջաններն ավելի բարձր ռիսկի են ենթարկվում՝ հիմնականում գործազրկության աճի պատճառով։

Լատվիայի սահմանից ոչ հեռու գտնվող Ակմենեի շրջանում յուրաքանչյուր երրորդ բնակիչն ապրում է աղքատության մեջ։

Երեք ամիսը մեկ անգամ կարիքավոր մարդիկ ստանում են մոտ հինգ կիլոգրամ սննդամթերք, այդ թվում՝ բանջարեղեն, մրգեր, ձավարեղեն, ձեթ և պահածոներ։

Սննդի փաթեթներ ստացողների մեծ մասը տարեց մարդիկ են, սակայն ավելի ու ավելի հաճախ օգնության համար դիմում են նաև երիտասարդ ընտանիքներ։ Շատերն ասում են, որ չեն կարող իրենց թույլ տալ խանութներից գնել անհրաժեշտ ամեն ինչ։

Նախարարությունում հայտնել են, որ ակնկալվում է՝ հաջորդ տարի իրավիճակը կբարելավվի նպաստների ինդեքսավորման փոփոխությունների և կենսաթոշակների նախատեսված բարձրացման շնորհիվ։ Սակայն տեղական պաշտոնյաները նշում են, որ աղքատության դեմ պայքարելը դեռևս դժվար է, և իշխանություններին այլ ընտրություն չի մնում, քան ավելացնել աջակցության վճարումները։

Միևնույն ժամանակ գյուղական բնակավայրերում աղքատությունը գրեթե երկու անգամ ավելի բարձր է, քան քաղաքներում։
