Դանթե Ալիգիերիի «Աստվածային կատակերգությունը» կարող է պարունակել ոչ միայն կրոնական խորհրդանշաններ և բանաստեղծական պատկերներ, այլ նաև, ինչպես պնդում են ժամանակակից հետազոտողները, ֆիզիկայի բախումների ոլորտում մտավոր փորձի վաղ ձև։ Նոր մեկնաբանության համաձայն՝ հանրահայտ «Դժոխքը» կարող էր լինել աղետալի մոլորակային հարվածի նկարագրություն՝ երկնաքարերի մասին ժամանակակից գիտության ի հայտ գալուց շատ առաջ։

Մարշալի համալսարանի հետազոտող Թիմոթի Բյուրբերին ենթադրում է, որ Դանթեն Լյուցիֆերի անկումը կարող էր պատկերացնել ոչ թե որպես զուտ հոգևոր իրադարձություն, այլ որպես իրական ֆիզիկական գործընթաց՝ հսկայական տիեզերական բախում։ Այս հիպոթեզի շրջանակում Սատանան մեկնաբանվում է որպես զանգվածային, բարձր արագությամբ օբյեկտ, որը հարվածել է Երկրի հարավային կիսագնդին և ուղղվել նրա միջուկի կողմը։ Հարվածի ուժը, իբր, երկրային զանգվածը մղել է դեպի հյուսիսային կիսագունդ՝ ձևավորելով այն կառուցվածքը, որը Դանթեն նկարագրել է որպես Դժոխք, իսկ տեղաշարժված նյութը, ըստ այս վարկածի, ստեղծել է Քավարանի լեռը մոլորակի հակառակ կողմում։

Հետազոտության հեղինակը այս ենթադրյալ աղետը համեմատում է Չիկսուլուբ աստերոիդի հարվածի հետ, որը կապում են դինոզավրերի ոչնչացման հետ։ Այսպիսի մեկնաբանությամբ Սատանայի անկումը հիշեցնում է տիեզերական օբյեկտ, որի մասշտաբը համադրելի է միջաստղային ʻOumuamua մարմնի հետ, որը աչքի էր ընկնում անսովոր ձևով և հետագծով։ Նշվում է նաև զուգահեռ Հոբա երկնաքարի հետ՝ Երկրի վրա հայտնի ամենամեծ տիեզերական ծագում ունեցող բեկորի, որն ըստ հետազոտողի պատկերացման՝ օգնում է երևակայել, թե ինչպես կարող էր «ֆիզիկական» Սատանան երևալ որպես ամբողջական օբյեկտ հարվածից հետո։

Առանձնահատուկ ուշադրություն է դարձվում դժոխքի ինը շրջանների կառուցվածքին։ Մեղքերի բացառապես խորհրդանշական մեկնաբանության փոխարեն Բյուրբերին առաջարկում է դրանք դիտարկել որպես հնարավոր արտացոլում համակենտրոն օղակների, որոնք բնորոշ են Լուսնի, Վեներայի և այլ մոլորակային մարմինների վրա գտնվող հսկայական հարվածային խառնարաններին։ Նրա կարծիքով՝ Դանթեն ինտուիտիվորեն նկարագրել է կառուցվածք, որը հիշեցնում է բազմաօղակ հարվածային ավազաններ՝ առաջացած մեծ օբյեկտների անկումից հետո։

Հետազոտությունը նաև պնդում է, որ Դանթեն կարող էր ինտուիտիվորեն անդրադառնալ վերջնական արագությանը և երկրակեղևի ներթափանցմանը վերաբերող գաղափարների, որոնք այսօր կիրառվում են մոլորակային գիտության մեջ՝ աստերոիդների հետ բախումների մոդելավորման ժամանակ։ Բացի այդ, կապ է անցկացվում երկրաչափական գաղափարների հետ, որոնք հետագայում զարգացում ստացան ոչ էվկլիդյան երկրաչափության մեջ, հատկապես «Դրախտում», ինչը մեկնաբանվում է որպես Տիեզերքի կառուցվածքը սովորական ֆիզիկական պատկերացումների սահմաններից դուրս նկարագրելու փորձ։

Հեղինակի տեսանկյունից՝ «Աստվածային կատակերգության» այսպիսի ընթերցումը դուրս է գալիս գրական վերլուծության շրջանակներից և կարող է նշանակություն ունենալ մոլորակային պաշտպանության գիտության համար։ Նա պնդում է, որ հնագույն տեքստերն ու առասպելները կարող էին արձանագրել բնական աղետների և տիեզերական վտանգների դիտարկումներ՝ դրանց գիտական բացատրության ի հայտ գալուց շատ առաջ։
