Նախկին զինանշանում առկա էին մի շարք զինանշանագիտական, ձևաբանական, գաղափարաբանական թերություններ: Այս մասին հայտնել է Պաշտպանության նախարարությունը՝ հիմնավորելով, թե ինչու են փոխել բանակի զինանշանը:
«2001 թվականին հաստատված և Հայաստանի Հանրապետության զինված ուժերի նախկին զինանշանում առկա էին մի շարք զինանշանագիտական, ձևաբանական, գաղափարաբանական թերություններ, ուստի բանակի կերպափոխման համատեքստում նախաձեռնվել է նաև զինանշանի արդիականացման սրբագրման գործընթացը։ Նախկին զինանշանի հիմնական կերպարը՝ արծիվը, ունի հերալդիկ և գեղագիտական էական թերություններ։ Արծիվը պատկերված է փակ կտուցով։ Հերալդիկայում փակ կտուցը համարվում է հանգիստ, ոչ մարտական վիճակ, հաճախ ընկալվում է անշունչ կերպար, ինչը հակասում է բանակի էությանը։ Բացակայում է արծվի հիմնական մարմինը՝ իրանը, այն ձուլված է ընդհանուր մակերեսին՝ ստեղծելով միայն փետուրներից հավաքված արծվակերպ պատկեր։ Բացակայում են արծվի վերջույթները, ճանկերը, զենքը. սա ստեղծում է անդամահատված, անզոր, խոցելի էակի տեսք, ինչն անթույլատրելի է բանակի խորհրդանիշի համար։
Նոր զինանշանի կենտրոնական կերպարը՝ արծիվը, վերաիմաստավորվել է, պատկերված է լիակատար կենդանի և ամբողջական մարմնավորմամբ։ Հստակ երևում են գլուխը, մարմինը, թևերը և ճանկերը՝ հաղթահարելով նախկին զինանշանի բացթողումները։ Արծվի կտուցը բաց է, ինչը հերալդիկայում արձանշում է կենսունակություն, պատրաստակամություն, զգոնություն, խոսքի և ուժի իրավունք, արծվի հստակ և դինամիկ կեցվածքն ուղղակիորեն խորհրդանշում է Հայաստանի Հանրապետության բանակի արթնությունն ու մարտական ոգին, այն մարմնավորում է բանակի առաքելությունը՝ պաշտպանել Հայաստանի Հանրապետության անկախությունը, սուվերենությունը և տարածքային ամբողջականությունը»,- ասված է հայտարարությունում:
