Մեծ Բրիտանիայում դպրոցականը 2 միլիոն տարեկան մաստոդոնտի ատամ է հայտնաբերել արշավի ժամանակ, ըստ Good News Network-ի։
Չարլի Օրչարդ-Լայլը մոր հետ արշավի էր դուրս եկել Անգլիայի արևելքում, երբ նկատել է ափի մոտ ջրից դուրս ցցված անսովոր քարե առարկա։ Ընտանիքը որոշել է վերցնել գտածոն և ցույց տալ մասնագետներին։
Մասնագետները հաստատել են, որ հայտնաբերված առարկան մաստոդոնտի վերին ատամ է, որը ապրել է մոտավորապես 8,5-ից 2 միլիոն տարի առաջ։
Գիտնականները գնահատում են, որ այս կենդանին կշռում էր մոտավորապես վեց տոննա և հասնում էր գրեթե 2,5 մետր բարձրության։ Տեսակը առանձնանում էր երկար, ուղիղ ժանիքներով և ոչնչացել էր մարդկանց ի հայտ գալուց շատ առաջ։
Տղայի մայրը պատմել է, որ հայտնաբերումից կարճ ժամանակ առաջ իր որդին խոսել էր փղերի նկատմամբ իր սիրո մասին։ Ատամի ծագումը հաստատելու համար գտածոյի լուսանկարն ուղարկվել է Լոնդոնի Բնական պատմության թանգարանի պրոֆեսոր Ադրիան Լիստերին։ Մասնագետը հաստատել է դրա իսկությունը և նշել, որ մնացորդները կարող էին երկար ժամանակ գտնվել տեղական ափամերձ նստվածքներում, ապա դուրս գալ ափամերձ էրոզիայի պատճառով։
