112 տարեկան հասակում մահացել է Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը վերապրած վերջին անձանցից մեկը՝  Մարի Վարդանյանը։

Ծնվելով 1914 թվականի օգոստոսի 17-ին պատմական Կիլիկիայի Այնթապ քաղաքում՝ Մերի Ուզքուշյանը (նրա օրիորդական ազգանունը) աշխարհ է եկել Հայոց ցեղասպանությանը նախորդող ժամանակահատվածում. Օսմանյան կայսրության կողմից հայ բնակչության դեմ իրականացված այդ արշավանքը խլել է մոտ 1,5 միլիոն մարդու կյանք։ Նա փոքր տարիքում վերապրել է ցեղասպանության սկզբնական շրջանը և իր հետ տարել այդ փորձառության հիշողությունը՝ ապրելով ավելի քան մեկ դար և տեսնելով չորս սերունդ։

Նրա ընտանիքը խուսափել է տեղահանությունից մասամբ հորեղբոր որդու՝ բժիշկ Կարապետ Եսայանի հովանավորության շնորհիվ. վերջինիս ընտանիքն օգնել է Ուզքուշյաններին փախչել Հալեպ 1920-ականների սկզբին՝ թողնելով տունն ու գրեթե ամբողջ ունեցվածքը։

Նրա հայրը ջրաղացպան էր և զբաղվում էր ձավարի արտադրությամբ։ Մարին մեծացել է՝ խոսելով հայերեն, թուրքերեն և ավելի ուշ՝ արաբերեն, ինչպես նաև սովորել է հյուսել (կեռիկով), կարել և գործել այնթապյան ոճի գորգեր. արհեստ, որը հետագայում օգնել է նրան ապրուստ վաստակել Հալեպում։ Տասնամյակներ անց նրա ձեռքի աշխատանքի նմուշները ցուցադրվել են Լիբանանի Անթիլիաս քաղաքում գտնվող Կիլիկիո Կաթողիկոսության թանգարանում։
