«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Բանկոմատների անհրաժեշտությունն արդեն իսկ ի հայտ էր եկել 20-րդ դարի սկզբին: Անհրաժեշտ էր մի մեքենա, որը կկարողանար կանխիկ գործարքներ իրականացնել առանց մարդու միջամտության: Շատերն էին ցանկանում նախագծել նման ապարատ: Իսկ ո՞վ է հնարել մեր ժամանակներում այդքան տարածված բանկոմատը:

Դա կատարել է ազգությամբ հայ Լյութեր Ջորջ Սիմյանը 1939 թվականին: Հենց նա է հիմք դրել բանկոմատների պատմությանը: Սիմյանը առաջինն է ստեղծել մի մեքենա, որը կարող է կանխիկ գումար ընդունել, և որի միջոցով կարելի է վճարել անդորրագրերը: Նա այն անվանել է Bankograph: Վարկային քարտեր այն ժամանակ գոյություն չեն ունեցել, ուստի եղած գործառույթները բավարար են եղել: Իր ստեղծած սարքի ներսում Սիմյանը տեղադրել է փոքրիկ լուսանկարչական ապարատ փողերը լուսանկարելու համար: Յուրաքանչյուր լուսանկարում դրոշմվում էր ժամանակն ու ամսաթիվը: Յուրաքանչյուր հաճախորդին տրվել է միջոցներ ստանալու մասին անդորրագիր: Գյուտարարը համոզել է բանկերից մեկի ղեկավարությանը՝ փորձարկել պատմության մեջ ստեղծված այդ առաջին բանկոմատը: Այնուամենայնիվ, սարքն ունեցել է մի քանի թերություններ. բանկոմատը կապ չի ունեցել բանկի հետ, փող ընդունել է, բայց չի տվել և եղել է շատ մեծ: Պարզ է, որ նման բանկոմատների պահանջարկը շատ քիչ է եղել, և արդյունքում փորձարկումները շուտով դադարեցվել են:

1967 թվականին Ջոն Շեֆերդ-Բարոնն է շարունակել բանկոմատների զարգացման պատմությունը: Նրա սարքը տեղադրվել է Լոնդոնի հյուսիսում գտնվող մեծ բանկի մոտ: Այս բանկոմատն արդեն ուներ անդորրագրերի հիման վրա կանխիկ գումար տալու գործառույթ, իսկ անդորրագրերը կարելի էր վերցնել բանկի աշխատողից: Հետագայում այդ անդորրագրերի փոխարեն հայտնվել են պլաստիկ քարտերն ու հայտնի PIN կոդերը: Սկզբնական շրջանում քարտային գործարքները նշվել են հենց քարտի վրա դակված անցքերի տեսքով: Այս բանկոմատն ավելի հաջող է ստացվել, բայց դա էլ երկար չի օգտագործվել:

Բանկոմատների պատմության մեջ բեկում տեղի է ունեցել, երբ գյուտարար Դոնալդ Վետցելը ստեղծել է մագնիսական շերտով հայտնի պլաստիկ քարտերը, որոնք պարունակում են բոլոր անհրաժեշտ տեղեկությունները սեփականատիրոջ և նրա գործունեության մասին: Սկզբնապես այդ քարտերը եղել են շատ թանկ և բաշխվել են միայն շատ մեծ բանկերի կողմից: 1973 թվականին բանկոմատը պաշտոնապես արտոնագրվել է: 2005 թվականին իր գյուտի համար Դոնալդ Վետցելը Մեծ Բրիտանիայի թագուհուց ստացել է Բրիտանական կայսրության շքանշան: Ներկայում աշխարհում կան միլիոնավոր բանկոմատներ, ընդ որում՝ դրանց քանակը անընդհատ աճում է:
