«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Ենթադրվում է, որ առաջին մոտոցիկլետը ստեղծվել է 1885 թվականին Գոթլիբ Դայմլերի կողմից. դա իրականում մոտոցիկլետի փայտե նախատիպ էր: Այդ առաջին մոտոցիկլետը փաստացի բենզինային շարժիչով հասարակ հեծանիվ էր, որի առավելագույն արագությունը կարող էր հասնել մինչև 12 կմ/ժ-ի։ Այլ երկրների գյուտարարները նույնպես աշխատել են իրենց մոտոցիկլի մոդելը ստեղծելու վրա:

Նման առաջին մոտոցիկլետներ 1887 թվականին գրեթե միաժամանակ ստեղծել են գյուտարարներ՝ անգլիացի Է.Բաթլերը և ֆրանսիացի Ֆ.Միլլենը, իսկ մի փոքր ավելի ուշ՝ 1893 թվականին, իտալացի Է.Բեռնարդին է ներկայացրել իր մոդելը։

Այդ օրերին հստակ բաժանում չկար մեքենայի և մոտոցիկլետի միջև, մրցույթներն անցկացվում էին նույն անվանումով՝ «Մեխանիկական թիմեր»։ 1894 թվականին Փարիզում անցկացվել է Փարիզ-Ռուան առաջին մրցումը, երթուղու երկարությունը 126 կմ, միջին արագությունը կազմել է 20,5 կմ/ժ։ Այդ իրադարձությունն էլ համարվում է ավտոմոտոսպորտի պատմության սկիզբը։

Մոտոցիկլետների առաջին առանձին մրցումները տեղի են ունեցել 1899 թվականին Վիեննայում։ Իսկ 20-րդ դարի սկզբին տեղի է ունեցել ավտոմեքենայի և մոտոցիկլետի վերջնական բաժանումը, և մրցույթներն սկսել են անցկացվել առանձին-առանձին։

1904 թ. Չեխիայում ստեղծվել է մոտոցիկլետների ակումբների միջազգային միությունը, ընդունվել են մրցումների կանոններ և պահանջներ մարզիկների համար:

1913 թվականին Անգլիայում անցկացվել են միջազգային Enduro մրցումներ: Այդ մրցումն էլ նշանավորել է մոտոցիկլետների բազմակողմանի մրցավազքի սկիզբը։ Enduro-ն տևել է վեց օր, և դրան մասնակցել է 162 մարզիկ մայրցամաքի տարբեր երկրներից։ Այն ժամանակների ամենամեծ մրցաշարը համարվում էր «Ազգերի մոտոկրոսը», որի առաջին մրցումները տեղի են ունեցել 1947 թվականին։

Մո տոս պոր տի Եվ րո պա յի առա ջ ի ն առաջնությունը տեղի է ունեցել 1955 թվականին, իսկ աշխարհի առաջնությունը՝ 1957 թվականին։ Հետագայում ի հայտ են եկել մոտոսպորտի տարբեր դիսցիպլիններ՝ մոտոկրոս, մոտոտրայլ, շրջանաձև-շասսեային մոտոկրոս և այլն։ Այդ ամենը հնարավոր է դարձել շնորհիվ մոտոցիկլետների մշտական տեխնիկական կատարելագործման և հզորացման:
