Bratislava forum to debate Armenia’s strategic future

POLITICS

The FAAE says a December conference will examine Armenia’s European and Eurasian ties as it urges opposition cooperation and wider diaspora engagement

Adebate shaped by overlapping relationship

BRATISLAVA, 6 November 2026 — Armenia’s ties with Europe and the Eurasian region are to be discussed at an international conference in Bratislava on 1 December, according to the Forum of Armenian Associations of Europe (FAAE). The planned event is part of a broader appeal for closer cooperation among Armenian opposition parties and greater involvement by Armenian communities abroad.

The Forum announced the meeting in a statement dated 6 November and signed by its president, Ashot Grigorian. Billed as “The Future of Armenia: Eurasian Union or European Union?”, the conference is intended to bring experts, political representatives and diaspora organisations into a discussion about the country’s strategic direction.

A debate shaped by overlapping relationships

Armenia’s international relationships provide the backdrop to that discussion. The country is listed as a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, while also deepening its partnership with the European Union. At their summit on 4–5 May 2026, EU and Armenian leaders reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation, including on connectivity, energy and transport.

The FAAE argues that decisions about these relationships have consequences extending beyond trade. Its proposed agenda links Armenia’s external orientation to national sovereignty, political stability and security in the South Caucasus.

An appeal for a common opposition platform

Alongside the conference announcement, the Forum endorses efforts to bring Armenian opposition parties closer together. It calls for internal divisions to be overcome and for a common political platform capable of responding to the challenges it identifies.

The statement also asks diaspora associations, community institutions and civil society figures in Europe and elsewhere to take an active part. The role it envisages combines political and diplomatic engagement with practical contributions to Armenia’s economy and public life.

Investment and expertise feature in the diaspora appeal

Industrial development, scientific research, education and cultural heritage are among the priorities set out by the Forum. It points to investment, professional expertise, scientific knowledge and business partnerships as ways in which Armenian communities abroad could support the country’s development.

The Armenian Apostolic Church also features in the statement. The FAAE describes the institution as central to the Armenian people’s historical, spiritual and national identity, and calls for it to be supported.

According to the Forum, representatives of Armenian opposition parties, diaspora organisations and public figures have already indicated their willingness to attend the Bratislava conference. The meeting is intended to connect the political debate over Armenia’s future with the resources and experience of its communities overseas.
