1876 թվականի այս օրը Ալեքսանդր Բելլը պատենտավորեց հեռախոսի գյուտը: Հեռախոսը ձայնային տատանումները վեր էր ածում էլեկտրական տատանումների և հակառակը: Թեև հեռախոսի գյուտը արվել էր ավելի վաղ 19-րդ դարի կեսերին փարիզեցի հեռագրատան աշխատակից Շառլեմ Բուրսելի կողմից, սակայն որպես կապի միջոց շրջանառվեց Բելլի կողմից: «Telephone» բառը առաջին անգամ օգտագործել է Բուրսելը: Հեռագրային ապարատի վրա աշխատելիս պատահաբար Բելլը զգաց, որ ձայներ է առաջանում, որը ուսումնասիրելուց հետո հասկացավ, որ կարելի է ձայնային տատանումները վերածել էլեկտրականի ու հակառակը, որի հիման վրա էլ ստեղծվեց առաջին հեռախոսային սարքերը:
1876 թվականի մարտի 7-ին նա ԱՄՆ-ում ստացավ իր գյուտի պատենտը, որը կրում էր 174,465 համարը: Բելլի գյուտից հետո նրա փառքը տարածվեց աշխարհով մեկ, սկսեց վճարովի լեկցիաներ կարդալ, ինչպես նաև պատենտավորման հաջորդ տարում ստեղխեց աշխարհում առաջին հեռախոսային ընկերությունը՝ «Bell Telephone Company»-ն:
