Ներկայումս մարդանց մոտ կարծես թե մոդայիկ է դարձել կենդանական սնունդից հրաժարվելը և բուսական սնունդով իրենց ստամոքսի գործունեությունն ապահովելը: Բուսական սնունդ նախընտրում են՝ հիմնականում ելնելով կրոնական և փիլիսոփայական նկատառումներից: Բուսակերները իրենց՝ կենդանական սնունդից հրաժարվելը փորձում են արդարացնել մի շարք միջոցներով՝ նշելով, թե հոգին մաքրելու և կատարելության հասնելու կարևոր նախապայման է: 

Սակայն ժամանակակից սննդաբանությունը, հիմնվելով ֆիզիոքիմիայի և բիոլոգիայի հետազոտությունների հիման վրա, խորհուրդ է տալիս սնվել թե բուսական, թե կենդանական սննդամթերքներով: 

Գիտնականները պարզել են, որ կենդանական ծագման մթերքներում մարդու օրգանիզմի բնականոն գործունեության համար անհրաժեշտ ամինաթթուների քանակը կրկնակի  շատ է, քան բուսական սննդամթերքներում, հետևաբար կենդանական սնունդը շատ կարևոր է նաև երեխաների համար, որպեսզի նրանց աճը բնականոն հունով ընթանա: Որպես կանոն, մսակերների մոտ շատ հաճախ փորկապություններ են արձանագրվում, ինչը պայմանավորված է օրգանիզմի կողմից մսամթերքի դանդաղ մարսելու հետ:

Սննդաբանները մսակերներին խորհուրդ են տալիս չհրաժարվել կաթնամթերքից, որը լիարժեք սպիտակուցների բնական աղբյուր է: Սակայն ինչ էլ լինի, անհրաժեշտ է պահպանել սննդակարգը, որտեղ ներառված կլինեն և բուսական, և կենդանական ծագման սնունդներ:
