Շուրթերի միջոցով ախտորոշում անելիս հաշվի է առնվում դրանց ձևը, չափը, գույնը։

Անհրաժեշտ է հաշվի առնել, որ ներքևի շուրթն արտացոլում է աղիների վիճակը, վերևի շուրթը՝ կենտրոնի հատվածում վերևից ներքև՝ վահանաձև գեղձի, սրտի և ստամոքսի, կենտրոնից աջ՝ լյարդի, աջ թոքի և աջ երիկամի և կենտրոնից ձախ՝ փայծախի, ձախ թոքի, ձախ երիկամի վիճակը։

Եվ այսպես, ուշադիր նայում ենք շուրթերին։

Եթե շուրթերը չոր են, ճաքճքած ու կոշտ, ապա սա վկայում է ջրազրկության մասին։ Այսպիսի շուրթերը կարող են վկայել շնչառության, մկանային շարժումների, սրտի աշխատանքի, նյարդային բջիջների առանձին ազդակների շարժման հետ կապված խնդիրների մասին։ 
Նյարդային խանգարումը, անհանգստությունն ու վախը նույնպես կարող են շուրթերի չորության պատճառ լինել։

Կարմրած շուրթերը, որոնց վրա բորբոքված բշտիկներ են առաջանում, վկայում են մարսողության, սնվելու, նյութափոխանակության, մարմնի ջերմաստիճանի հնարավոր խանգաումների մասին։

Այսպիսի շուրթեր կարող են նաև լինել զայրույթի, ատելության ու նախանձի զգացման հետևանքով։

Գունատ շուրթերը կարող են վկայել սպիտակարյունության մասին։

Քրոնիկ ծխելու հետևանքով շուրթերի գույնը մուգ շագանակագույն գույն է ստանում։

Եթե շուրթերի վրա բազմաթիվ բաց շագանակագույն բծեր կան, ապա դա վկայում է մարսողության խանգարման կամ հաստ աղիքի մեջ որդի առկայության մասին։

Դեղնախտի ժամանակ շուրթերը դեղնում են, սրտային հիվանդությունների ժամանակ թթվածնի անբավարարության պատճառով շուրթերը կապտում են։

Շուրթերի անհավասարաչափ գունավորումը վկայում է շուրթի համապատասխան վայրի համար պատասխանատու օրգանների (տե՛ս նկարը) հետ կապված խնդիրների մասին։

Եթե շուրթերը հանկարծակի բարակում ու ավելի սեղմված են դառնում, ապա դա կարող է վկայել հաստ աղիքի խանգարման, մասնավորապես՝ քրոնիկական կոլիտի ու փորկապության մասին։

Շուրթերի վրա ճաքերի առկայությունը կարող է հիպովիտամինոզով բացատրվել։ Իսկ պարզ ուղղահայաց գծերը կարող են արևի բացասական ազդեցության կամ պարզապես տարիքային փոփոխությունների հետևանքը լինել։

Ծնոտի ու ներքևի շրթունքի արանքի մաշկի զգայունության խանգարումը կարող է սրտամկանի կաթվածի նշան լինել։

Շուրթերի այս կամ այն հատվածի գունազրկման դեպքում անհրաժեշտ է հաշվի առնլ ներքին օրգանների պրոյեկցիան։
