1907թ ի մարտի 22 ին Լոնդոնի փողոցներում հայտնվեցին հատուկ հաշվիչներ ունեցող առաջին մեքենաները: Լոնդոնցի փոխադրողները հաշվիչը անվանեցին «տաքսիմետր»՝ ֆրանսերեն «տաքս» (վճար) և հունարեն «մետրոն» (չափում) բառերից: Այդ ժամանակից ի վեր անհատական քաղաքային տրանսպորտը կոչվեց տաքսի, իսկ վարորդները՝ տաքսիստ:
