Ժամանակակից աշխարհում անձնական հիգիենայի պահպանումը պարտադիր նախապայման է սոցիալական կայուն դիրք ունենալու համար: Սակայն նախկինում մարմնի մաքրության պահպանման հարցը, մեղմ ասած, երկրորդական է եղել:

4. Մաշկից եկող գարշահոտը մեղմացնելու համար մարդիկ մարմնի տարբեր հատվածներին բուրավետ ծաղիկներ էին կրում: Սակայն դրանց բույրը միախառնվում էր գարշահոտի հետ` էլ ավելի «թունավոր» բույր առաջացնելով:
5. 18-րդ դարի բարձրաշխարհիկ եվրոպացիների կողմից այդքան պաշտելի կեղծամների խնամքի համար հատուկ մուս էր պատրաստվում կենդանական ճարպից: Դրանից եկող գարշահոտն ուղղակի աննկարագրելի էր:
