Այսօր Շուշիի ազատագրման օրն է

24 տարի առաջ այս օրը՝ մայիսի 8-ին, Արցախի Պաշտպանության բանակը եւ կամավորական ջոկատներն ազատագրեցին Շուշին։
Շուշիի ազատագրումը բեկումնային էր Ղարաբաղյան պատերազմում: Հենց այստեղից ադրբեջանցիները հարվածում էիր Ստեփանակերտի եւ մերձակա գյուղերի ուղղությամբ:
Չնայած հակառակորդի գերակշռող ուժին, հայ հերոսների արիության եւ փայլուն մարտունակության շնորհիվ, մայիսի 9-ին Շուշին վերջնականապես ազատագրվեց, ինչը թույլ տվեց վերադարձնել հայրենի հողը եւ շարժվել դեպի առաջ:
Մարտական գործողությունները ճշգրիտ հաշվարկված էին։ Շուշիի ազատագրմամբ Արցախյան շարժումը թևակոխեց որակական նոր փուլ՝ վճռական բեկում մտցվեց պատերազմում, և Լեռնային Ղարաբաղի Հանրապետության անկախությունը դարձավ ավելի քան իրական։
Շուշիի ազատագրման ռազմական գործողությունն անցկացվել է 1992 թ. մայիսի 8-9-ին։ Մշակման և իրականացման առումով գրեթե անթերի, հայ ռազմարվեստի մեջ եզակի ռազմական գործողություն, որով արմատական բեկում է առաջացել Արցախյան ազատագրական պատերազմում։
Գործողությունն իրականացվել է 4 ուղղություններով՝ միաժամանակյա հարձակումներով՝ մայիսի լույս 8-ի գիշերը ժամը 2.30-ին, Քիրսի ռազմական դիրքերը գրավելուց և Լաչին-Շուշի ճանապարհը հսկողության տակ վերցնելուց հետո՝ ՄՄ-21 ռեակտիվ մարտկոցի համազարկով։ Ռազմական գործողությունը ղեկավարել է Ինքնապաշտպանության ուժերի (ԻՊՈւ) հրամանատար Արկադի Տեր-Թադևոսյանը։
1991թ. նոյեմբերից մինչեւ 1992թ. մայիսի սկիզբը Շուշիից, Ջանհասանից, Քյոսալարից, Ղայբալուից Ստեփանակերտի վրա արձակվել է շուրջ 4740 արկ, որոնցից մոտ 3 հազարը «Գրադ» կայանքներից: Այդ հրետակոծությունների հետեւանքով զոհվել է 111 եւ վիրավորվել 332 խաղաղ բնակիչ, ավերվել 370 բնակելի տուն եւ շինություն:
Ինքնապաշտպանության ուժերի` 1991թ. վերջի եւ 1992թ. սկզբի հաջող գործողությունները, մի շարք կրակակետերի ճնշումը, Խոջալուի ազատագրումը (25-26 փետրվարի 1992թ.) եւ օդանավակայանի բացումը ստեղծեցին տնտեսական, ռազմական եւ բարոյահոգեբանական բոլոր նախադրյալները Շուշիի ազատագրումը նախապատրաստելու համար:
Մայիսի 8-ի երեկոյան տրված դադարը հակառակորդին հնարավորություն է ընձեռել հատկացված միջանցքով հեռանալ բերդաքաղաքից: Մայիսի 9-ին արդեն Շուշին ազատագրված էր:
Շուշիի ազատագրման մարտերում հայկական կողմն ունեցել է 57 զոհ, թշնամին՝ 250-300 սպանված, 600-700 վիրավոր, 13 գերի:
