Հանրապետական կուսակցությունից ԱՄՆ նախագահի թեկնածու Դոնալդ Թրամփը զենք ոնեցողներին վստահեցրել է, որ եթե ինքն ընտրվի նախագահ, ամենուրեք կթույլատրվի զենք կրել: Նա օրինակ է բերել 2015-ին Թենեսի նահանգում չորս ծովային հետեւակայինների սպանությունը: Դա տեղի էր ունեցել մի գոտում, որտեղ արգելված է զենք կրել:

Հանրապետականը իր այս հայտարարությունը արել է Լուիսվիլում՝ Քենթուկի նահանգում, Ազգային հրաձգային ասոցիացիայի ազգային համագումարի ժամանակ: Թրամփը դրանով դեպի իրեն է գրավել հզոր լոբիստական խումբ, որն ավելի քան 4 մլն անդամ ունի:

Ասոցիացիայի ղեկավար Քրիս Քոքսը, ներկայացնելով Թրամփին, նրան անվանել է ԱՄՆ ապագա նախագահը: Նա հանրապետականներին կոչ է արել միավորվել՝ ասելով որ դա պայքար է հանուն իրենց ազատության եւ բոլորին հորդորել է մասնակցել ընտրություններին ու թույլ չտալ Հիլաի Քլինթոնի հաղթանակը:

Թրամփը վստահեցրել է, որ պաշտպանելու է զենք կրելու սահմանադրական իրավունքը: Նա Դեմոկրատական կուսակցությունից իր մրցակից Հիլարի Քլինթոնին մեղադրել է այդ իրավունքը ոտնահարելու ցանկության մեջ՝ ասելով որ նա ուզում է ոչ թե փոխել, այլ ոչնչացնել Սահմանադրության երկրորդ կետը:

Քլինթոնը արձագանքել է Թրամփի խոսքին Twitter–ում «Դու իրավացի չես, Դոնալդ Թրամփ: Մենք կարող ենք պաշտպանել Երկրորդ կետի իրավունքը, միաժամանակ կանխելով զենքի կիրառումով անիմաստ բռնությունները»:
