Այս հարցի պատասխանը երբեք ոչ ոք միանշանակ չի տվել: Մասնագետների մի մասը կարծում է, որ ուտելու ընթացքում ջուր խմելը խանգարում է մարսողությանը, իսկ մյուս մասը՝ հակառակը: Ուտելիս ջուր չխմելուն ավելի հակված են ավանդական բժշկությամբ զբաղվողները, իսկ մասնագիտացած բժիշկները նշում են, որ ուտելիս կարելի է խմել: Նրանք, ովքեր դեմ են, նշում են, որ ջուրը ստամոքսում իջեցնում է թթվայնությունը՝ թույլ չտալով սնունդը մարսել:
Այս տեսակետի կողմնակիցները նշում են, որ սնվելուց առաջ և հետո նույնպես խորհուրդ չի տրվում ջուր խմել: Լավագույն դեպքում հարկավոր է, որպեսզի սնունդն ընդունելուց անցնի 2 ժամ: Բժիշկները, սակայն պնդում են ճիշտ հակառակը: Ըստ նրանց, ջուրն ի զորու չէ ստամոքսում չեզոքացնել թթվայնությունը, եթե իհարկե այն չի հասնում 8-10 լիտրի: Մարդը կարող է ստամոքսի թթվայնությունն իջեցնել միայն մեխանիկական միջամտության արդյունքում, բայց ոչ մեկ բաժակ ջրով: Նրանց կարծիքով, թթվայնությունը ստամոքսում 1 միլիոն անգամ ավելի շատ է, քան ջրում, հետևաբար մեկ, և նույնիսկ 3 բաժակ ջուրը չի կարող ազդեցություն թողնել մարսողության վրա:
Մյուս հիմնավորումն այն է, որ օրգանիզմում գրեթե բոլոր գործընթացները տեղի են ունենում հենց ջրում, հետևաբար մեկ բաժակ ջուրը չի կարող փոխել օրգանիզմում ընթացող որևէ գործընթացի ընթացքը:
