Առաջին աշխարհամարտի տարիներին Գերմանիան Օսմանյան կայսրության ամենակարևոր դաշնակիցներից էր: Իր հյուպատոսներից ստացած զեկույցների արդյունքում երկիրը շատ լավ տեղեկացված էր, որ հայերի դեմ ցեղասպանություն է իրականացվում: Ինչպես հաղորդում է «Արմենպրես»-ը, այս մասին Ստամբուլի հայկական «Ակոս» պարբերականի հետ զրույցում ասել է Der Spiegel պարբերականի նախկին գլխավոր խմբագիր, գերմանացի պատմաբան Վոլֆգանգ Գուստը' խոսելով Հայոց ցեղասպանության հարցում Գերմանիայի պատասխանատվության մասին:
Պատմաբանը նշել է, որ Ցեղասպանության տարիներին գերմանացի դիվանագետները օսմանյան կառավարությանը շատ անվնաս նամակներ էին գրում' փորձելով միայն տպավորություն ստեղծել, թե ցանկանում են հայերին օգնել: Սակայն Գերմանիայի արտգործնախարարության արձագանքն այլ էր: Այն ժամանակվա կանցլեր Բեթման Հոլվեգն այդ տարիներին ասել էր. «Մեր միակ նպատակը մինչև պատերազմի ավարտը Թուրքիային մեր կողքին պահելն է, այդ ընթացքում հայերի լինել-չլինելը կարևորություն չունի»:
Գուստը փաստել է, որ Հայոց ցեղասպանության հարցում պետք չէ աչքաթող անել նաև Թուրքիայում գերմանացի զինվորականների դերը: Կայսրության մի շարք հատվածներում նրանք անձամբ են ղեկավարել հայաբնակ շրջանների վրա իրականացվող հարձակումները:
«Գերմանիայի խորհրդարանի կողմից ընդունված բանաձևը նման է այլ խորհրդարաններում ընդունված բանաձևերին, ինչը, մեղմ ասած, զարմացնող է, իսկ անձամբ իմ կարծիքով' սկանդալային, քանի որ գերմանացիները հայերի ապրած ողբերգության ականատեսները չէին, այլ գործող անձինք էին»,- նշել է Գուստը' հիշեցնելով, որ գերմանացիները ոչինչ չեն ձեռնարկել Ցեղասպանությունը կանխելու կամ ինչ-որ կերպ դրա հետևանքները թեթևացնելու համար:
«Այս բանաձևը, պաշտոնապես «ցեղասպանություն» անվանելով Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը, հնարավոր է, որ բացի շատ գերմանացիների, այդ թվում և թուրքական ծագում ունեցողների աչքերը: Բացի այդ, այն կարող է ավելի տեսանելի դարձնել գերմանացիների և մյուսների կողմից իրականացված այլ ցեղասպանությունները ևս»,- ասել է նա:
