Գիտնականները փորձ են անց կացրել տարբեր կենդանիների վրա և փորձել են հասկանալ, թե ինչպես է սնունդը ազդում տարբեր գեներ ունեցող կենդանիների վրա: Փորձը ցույց է տվել, որ չկա իդեալական դիետա, որ կարող է որևէ մեկին օգնել առողջ լինել և քաշ կորցնել:

Հետազոտողները մկների չորս խմբի տարբեր տեսակի սննդակարգերով են կերակրել՝ արևմտյան, ճապոնական, միջերկրածովյան և Ատկինի սննդակարգին պատկանող շատ ճարպ և քիչ ածխաջրածին պարունակող սնունդով: Միջերկրածովյան սննդին ավելացվել էր կարմիր գինու էքստրակտ, իսկ ճապոնականին՝ կանաչ թեյի էքստրակտ, որպեսզի սննդակարգը ավելի մոտ լիներ մարդկանց սովորական սննդակարգին:

Մկները կարող էին ուտել այն ամենն, ինչ ցանկանում էին: Գիտանականները որոշում էին միայն ուտելիքի չափը, որ մկները պետք է ընդունեին:

Վեց ամիս անց հետազոտողները պարզեցին, որ մկների մի ցեղատեսակը արևմտյան սնունդ ուտելուց գիրացել էր և լյարդի հիվանդություն ձեռք բերել, սակայն ոչ մի առողջական խնդիր չէր ունեցել Ատկինի սննդակարգից:

Մկների մեկ այլ ցեղատեսակ գիրացել էր Ատկինի սննդակարգին հետևելուց և ուներ նյութափոխանակության խնդիրների նախանշաններ, սակայն արևմտյան դիետայի հետ կապված ոչ մի խնդիր չուներ:

Հետազոտողներից մեկը՝ Նորթ Քարոլայնի համալսարանի դոկտոր Ուիլլիամ Բարինգտոնն ասաց. «Որոշ դիետաների առողջարար հատկությունները, ինչպես նաև ռիսկերը շատ են ընդհանրացվում: Մեր հետազոտությունը ցույց տվեց, որ դիետայի ազդեցությունը կարող է կախված լինել դիետա պահող անձի գենետիկական ստրուկտուրայից, ինչն էլ նշանակում է, որ ամեն մարդ ունի սննդակարգ, որ իրեն կարող է օգտակար լինել: Մենք հույս ունենք ապագայում ավելի խորը ուսումնասիրել սա և հասկանալ, թե ինչպես են գենային ֆակտորները ազդում օրգանիզմի՝ դիետայի տրվող պատասխան ռեակցիայի վրա:»

Հետազոտությունը պարզեց, որ տարբեր պատճառներ կային, որ մկների տարբեր տեսակները գիրանում էին:

«Հատուկ սննդակարգեր ունեցող մկները ավելի շատ կալորիաներ էին ուտում, և այդ իսկ պատճառով գիրանում էին: Սակայն,այլ դիետաների հետևող մկները ավելի քիչ էին ուտում, սակայն միևնույն է գիրանում էին,» - ասում է դոկտոր Բարինգտոնը:

Օրինակ, Ատկինի սննդակարգի շնորհիվ բոլոր ցեղատեսակի մկներն էլ առանց որևէ գործողություն անելու կալորիաներ էին կորցնում, մինչ այդ նույն դիետան պահող մկներից որոշները անչափ շատ էին ուտում և գիրանում:

Այսպիսով՝ դոկտոր Բարինգտոնն ասում է. «Մարդկանց և մկների մոտ նյութափոխանակության և գենետիկ նմանությունն օգնում է մեզ հավատալ, որ տարբեր դիետաներին տարբեր պատասխան ռեակցիաներ տալը նաև կնկատվի մարդկանց մոտ: Քանի որ գոյություն ունեն տարբեր դիետաներ ամեն անհատի համար, հետևաբար սա ընդգծում է սնուցման ճշգրտման կարևորությունը, որով հատուկ սննդակարգ կստեղծվի յուրաքանչյուր անհատի համար:»
