Թուրքիայում կոչ են անում մահապատիժը վերականգնելու հարցում հաշվի չնստել ԵՄ տեսակետի հետ: Նման հայտարարությամբ է հանդես եկել Թուրքիայի արդարադատության նախարար Բեկիր Բոզդագը CNN Turk հեռուստաալիքի եթերում:
Նրա խոսքով, մահապատժի հարցով որոշման հիմքում պետք է լինի Թուրքիայի օրենսդրությունը, այլ ոչ թե ԵՄ ցանկությունները, հայտնում է BBC –ն:
Ավելի վաղ ԵՄ արտաքին գործերով ներկայացուցիչ Ֆեդերիկա Մոգերինին հայտնել էր, որ մահապատիժ վերականգնող երկիրը չի կարող անդամակցել ԵՄ-ին, ինչին Թուրքիան վաղուց է ձգտում:
Մահապատժի վերականգնման հարցը Թուրքիայում ակտիվացել է հուլիսի 15-ի հեղաշրջման փորձից հետո: Թուրքիայի նախագահ Էրդողանը հայտարարել է, որ այդ հարցը կքննարկվի խորհրդարանում, ու դրական եզրակացության դեպքում ինքը կհաստատի օրենսդիրների որոշումը:
Պետհեղաշրջման փորձին առնչություն ունենալու կասկածանքով արդեն ձերբակալվել ու պաշտոններից ժամանակավորապես հեռացվել է ավելի քան 20 հազար մարդ: Նրանցից 9 հազարը ոստիկաններ են, 3 հազարը՝ դատավորներ ու 6 հազարը՝ զինվորականներ, նաեւ բուհերի դասախոսներ:
