Հևի մետալ երաժշտությունը հաճախ ասոցացվում է մահվան հետ, սակայն հետազոտությունը ցույց է տալիս, որ հևի մետալն օգնում է պայքարել մահվան մասին մտքերի դեմ: Journal of Psychology of Popular Media-ի ուսումնասիրությունը պարզել է, որ ինքնության զգացումը, որ մահվան թեմա ունեցող երաժշտությունն է ստեղծում, ունկնդիրներին տալիս է կյանքի իմաստը: Այս զգացումը օգնում է հևի մետալի երկրպագուներին պայքարել սեփական մահվան գաղափարի դեմ: Այնուամենայնիվ, հետազոտողները պնդում են, որ այս երաժշտությունը չի օգնի նրանց, ովքեր չեն սիրում այս ոճը:

Հոգեբանների բացահայտումները հենվում են Սարսափի կառավարման տեսության վրա: Ըստ Սարսափի կառավարման տեսության՝ մշակութային արժեքները, կյանքին արժեք և նպատակ տալով, օգնում են մարդկանց կառավարել իրենց սեփական մահվան հեռանկարները:

«Նրանք, ովքեր չեն սիրում հևի մետալ, կարծում են, որ այդ երաժշտությունը հաճախ մահվան հետ է ասոցացվում, մինչ այդ ենթամշակույթի ներկայացուցիչները պնդում են, որ հևի մետալ լսելը օգնում է նրանց ազատվել ընկճվածությունից և մահվամ մասին մտքերից: Մետալ երաժշտության տեսակը կարող է երկրպագուների համար համարվել մշակութային արտադրանք և դրա շնորհիվ կարող է կառուցել նրանց հասարակական ինքնությունը», - գրում են հոգեբանները:

Նիդեռլանդների և Գերմանիայի համալսարանների հետազոտողները մի նախագիծ են անցկացրել 30 մարդկանց հետ: Նրանք փորձել են տեսնել, թե արդյոք հևի մետալի մշակույթը կա նրանց մտքերում մահվան մասին գրելուց առաջ և հետո: Մի խմբի համար նվագեցին Slayer-ի Angel of Death երգը, մինչ մյուս խումբը աուդիոգիրք էր լսում: Հոգեբաններն ասում են, որ այս փորձերի արդյունքները ցույց տվեցին, որ հևի մետալ լսողների մոտ ավելի բարձր է ինքնագնահատականը և դա օգնում է մահվան գաղափարի մասին գրել:
