Ռիոյի խաղերը դեռ մեկնարկից առաջ էին հռչակվել ամենասկանդալայինը պատմության մեջ: Եվ իսկապես, իրական բրազիլական կրքերը բորբոքվել էին ոչ միայն մրցահարթակներում, այլ նաև իրական կյանքում: Առաջին սկանդալները, որ հեղեղեցին համաշխարհային լրահոսը, դա Բրազիլիայում տիրող ու սերիալներից արդեն մեզ ծանոթ փողոցային կողոպուտների մասին էին: Չերնոգորիայի հավաքականի վրա, օրինակ, տեղի ավազակները իսկական հարձակում էին կատարել, թալանել ու առևանգել  էին պատվիրակության անդամներից մեկի մեքենան, իսկ հետո էլ բրոնզե մեդալակիր Դիրկ վան Տիխելտին էին ծեծել ու կողոպտել ծովափին, որտեղ նա իր նվաճումն էր տոնում: Երկրպագուներն էլ նրան սատարելու փոխարեն ծաղրում էին, թե իբր ձյուդոյի բրոնզե մեդալակիրը անգամ կողոպտիչի հախից չկարողացավ գալ:  Այնուհետև համացանցում հայտնվեց ամերիկացի լողորդների հարբած ծեծկռտուքի տեսանյութը, որտեղ մարզիկները ավտոլցակայանում ոտքով ջարդում են դուռը, ծեծում սպասարկող անձնակազմին և միայն անվտանգության աշխատակցի ատրճանակն է նրանց ստիպում կանգ առնել:Օլիմպիական այս խաղերի կարգախոսը միանշանակ կարելի է ձևակերպել այսպես. ՛՛սեքս, խմիչք, ռոկենռոլ՛՛: Հոլանդացի մարմնամարզիկ Վան Գիլդերին հանեցին մրցումներից հարբեցողության համար, իսկ ահա սինխրոն լողի բրազիլական հավաքականի ներկայացուցիչ Ինգրիդ Օլիվեյրան մեկ այլ հավաքականի երիտասարդներից մեկի հետ սիրային երեկո անցկացնելու համար փորձում էր սենյակից որոշ ժամանակով հեռացնել իր զուգընկերուհուն, որի հետ առավոտյան պիտի ելույթ ունենար: Սակայն աղջիկներին չի հաջողվում պայմանավորվել: Տեղի է ունենում ծեծ ու մեծ սկանդալ, իսկ աղջիկները մրցումներում գրավում են վերջին տեղն ու վերջակետ դնում իրենց երկար տարիների ընկերությանը: 

Առհասարակ` այս խաղերի ընթացքում ակնհայտ էր անգամ կազմակերպիչների ամենաթողությունը նման իրավիճակների հանդեպ: Դա է ապացուցում այն փաստը, որ խաղերից առաջ կազմակերպիչները 450 000 անվճար պահպանակներ են բաժանել Օլիմպիադայի մեջ ներգրավված մարզիկներին, պատվիրակություններին ու կամավորներին: Սա երեք անգամ ավելին է, քան Լոնդոնի Օլիմպիադայի ժամանակ: Սիրային սանձարձակություններն են ապացուցում նաև միասեռական ամուսնությունների առաջարկությունները, որոնք իրենց տեսակով ակցիա ու քարոզ էին խաղերին հետևողների  համար: ԼԳԲՏ համայնքի անդամ, բրիտանացի մարզիկ Թոմ Բոսվորտը բոլորի աչքի առաջ մատանի նվիրեց իր բոյֆրենդին, իսկ դրանից առաջ բրազիլուհի ռեգբիստ Իսադորա Սերուլլոն ընդունեց իր ընկերուհու ամուսնության առաջարկը՝ նշանավորելով այն երկար համբույրով:Օլիմպիական խաղերի ճաշացանկը ևս չէր գոհացրել մարզիկներին և նրանք հրաժարվում էին իրենց հասանելիք ուտելիքից: Քաղաքային իշխանությունները որոշեցին այդ սնունդը նվիրաբերել Ռիոյի անտուններին, իսկ աշխարհն էլ ևս մեկ անգամ տեսավ, թե որքան շերտազատված ու ծայրահեղ անհավասար է հասարակությունը Բրազիլիայում, երկիր, որտեղ ապրում են միայն թշվառներ ու մեծահարուստներ, իսկ միջին խավը գրեթե բացակայում է՝ ճիշտ այնպես, ինչպես մեր տեսած բրազիլական սերիալներում:
