Թոշակի մասին պատմության մեջ առաջինը հիշատակվում է Ֆրանսիայում՝ Լյուդովիկոս XI-ի օրոք՝ XV դարում: Փարիզի Հաշվիչ պալատի փաստաթղթերում հայտնաբերվել են հիշատակումներ գումարների մասին, որ ամեն տարի հատկացվել են թագավորի անձնական սպասավորին և այլ ծառայողների: Ընդ որում՝ նմանատիպ թոշակը մեր օրերում ավելի շուտ կկոչվեր կաշառք:

«Թոշակ»-ի հիմնադիրը դարձավ Գերմանիայի կանցլեր Օտտո ֆոն Բիսմարկը՝ 1889 թվականին: 20 տարի անց նրան հետևեցին Անգլիան և Ավստրալիան, իսկ ԱՄՆ-ում սկսեցին իրենց քաղաքացիներին թոշակ վճարել 20-րդ դարի 30-ականներին:

Ռուսաստանում թոշակը ներմուծել է բարեփոխիչ Պետրոս Առաջինը: Նրա նախորդները երկար տարիներ հավատարիմ ծառայության համար պարգևատրում էին միայն մուշտակներով կամ կալվածքներով: Նրա օրոք թոշակ հատկացվում էր միայն սպաներին, իսկ հասարակ զինվորականները, 25 տարի ծառայելով, տուն էին գնում՝ առանց որևէ գրոշի: Հեղափոխությունից հետո Կառավարությունը չէր շտապում թոշակներ բաժանել: 1918 թվականին թոշակ հատկացվեց Կարմիր բանակի հաշմանդամներին, 1923-ին սկսեցին թոշակ ստանալ վաստակած հանգստի անցնող բոլշևիկները, 1928-ից սկսեցին թոշակներ հատկացնել որոշ գործարանների աշխատակիցներին, իսկ 1937-ին՝ նաև մյուսներին:

Մեր օրերում աշխարհի գրեթե բոլոր երկրներում կենսաթոշակային տարիքը 65-ն է, միայն Ճապոնիայում են թոշակի անցնում 70 տարեկանում: Տարեցտարի թոշակառուների թիվը տարբեր երկրներում միայն ավելանում է, իսկ 90-ականներին նրանց թիվը որոշ երկրներում գերազանցում էր երեխաների թվին: 2050-ին նման վիճակագրություն է սպասվում բոլոր երկրներում:

Ամենամեծ թոշակը Դանիայում են տալիս, այն կազմում է գրեթե 3000 դոլար՝ ամսում:

Չինաստանում պետության կողմից թոշակ հատկացվում է միայն զինվորականներին, ոստիկաններին և պետական ծառայողներին, մյուսներին պարտավոր են «ապահովել» զավակներն ու թոռները:
