Ողջ աշխարհում հոթ-դոգն ամենատարածված արագ սնունդն է։ Այն միայն ԱՄՆ-ում ունի 7 մլն սպառող։ Սակայն վերջերս հոթ-դոգը դարձել է քննարկման թեմա, երբ ի հայտ եկան վկայություններ, որ այն կարող է կապված լինել 4 տեսակի քաղցկեղի առաջացման հետ։
 
Հոթ-դոգն առաջին անգամ ներկայացվել է Գերմանիայում միգրանտների կողմից դեռևս 19-րդ դարում։ Տարիների ընթացքում այն սկսեց առավել մեծ ժողովրդականություն վայելել և այժմ դարձել է ինչպես մեծահասակների, այնպես էլ երեխաների սիրելի սննունդը։
 
Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպությունը վերջերս զգուշացում տարածեց, որում ասվում էր, որ վերամշակված միսը, այդ թվում նաև կարմիր միսը, մեծացնում է քաղցկեղի հավանականությունը։
 
 
Հոթ-դոգի պատրաստման ժամանակ օգտագործվում են հավի, խոզի, տավարի միս, ինչպես նաև կենդանիների կաշին, ոտքերը, գլուխը, ճարպային մնացորդները։ Ավելացվում են նաև բազմաթիվ հավելումներ, ինչպիսիք են նիտրիտները, մեծ քանակությամբ աղ, եգիպտացորենի օշարակ և մի շարք այլ քիմիական հավելումներ, որոնց մեծ մասը կապված է քաղցկեղի առաջացման հետ։
Նշվում է, որ հոթ-դոգերից քաղցկեղով հիվանդանալու հավանականությունն այնքան է, որքան ծխախոտից։ 
 
Հոթ-դոգի մեջ առկա ամենավնասակար նյութերը նիտրիտն ու նիտրատն է, որոնք կապված են 4 տեսակի քաղցկեղի առաջացման հետ՝

Ըստ Քաղցկեղի ուսումնասիրման ամերիկյան կենտրոնի, այն մարդիկ, ովքեր հաճախ են ուտում հոթ-դոգ, մեծացնում են քաղցկեղով հիվանդանալու հավանականությունը 21 տոկոսով։
