Ինչու՞ ենք մենք ոգևորված խանութներ գնում, երբ գրպանում գումար է հայտնվում: Յուրաքանչյուր նոր ապրանք գնելիս մենք ուրախանում ենք, սակայն մի քանի օր անց բավարարվածւթյան զգացումը կորում է միանգամից: Ցանկանում ենք Ձեզ օգնել հասկանալ, թե ինչպես է կարելի իրական երջանկություն ու ուրախություն:

Պարզվում է, որ ուրախության գլխավոր գրավականը հարմարվողականությունն է: Երբ նոր գնած իրը դառնում է մեզ համար հասարակ և սովորական՝ կյանքից բավարարվածության մակարդակն իջնում է մեր գիտակցության մեջ: Դրանից հետո ցանկանում ենք արագորեն գտնել նոր «մոտիվացիա» և էլի գնումների գնալ: Այս պրոցեսը շարունակվում է նորից ու նորից:

Քորնելի համալսարանում կատարված ուսումնասիրությունները եկել են այն եզրահանգման, որ կա մի եղանակ, որով կարելի է կանգնեցնել այս հավերժ ընթացող  ցիկլը: Հոգեբանության պրոֆեսոր Թոմաս Գիլովիչը ցույց է տվել, որ մենք նույնչափ ուրախություն ենք ապրում և՛ այն ժամանակ, երբ գնում ենք այն իրը, որը ցանկանում ենք, և՛ այն ժամանակ, երբ ճանապարհորդում ենք: Սակայն մի կարևոր կետ կա. Երբ հոգնում ենք գնած իրերից՝ ուրախությունը նվազում է, իսկ ճանապարհորդական հիշողությունները մեզ հետ են մնում շատ երկար ժամանակ՝ պահպանելով ուրախության հորմոնները:

Տարբեր տեսակի երեկույթների գնալը, ճամփորդելը, նոր հմտություններ ձեռք բերելը, անգամ էքստրեմալ սպորտով զբաղվելը ուրախության իդեալական աղբյուր են հանդիսանում յուրաքանչյուրիս համար: Նոր բջջայինը կամ անգամ նոր մեքենան դառնում են հերթական իրը որը մենք սեփականաշնորհում ենք, և նաև որոնք հնանում են և կորցնում արժեքը: Իսկ յուրաքանչյուր նոր հուշ դառնում է հաճույքի և ուրախության աղբյուր, որը մեզ չի լքում կյանքի ողջ ընթացքում:
