Հեռավոր թագավորությունում այսպիսի մի ավանդույթ կար։ Յուրաքանչյուր հանցագործ, ում մահապատիժ են նշանակում, մահանալուց առաջ  փուշկ էր քաշում, որը նրան հնարավորություն էր տալիս փրկվելու։ Արկղիկի մեջ երկու թուղթ էին գցում․ մեկի վրա գրված էր լինում «կյանք», մյուսի վրա՝ «մահ»։ Եթե դատապարտյալը առաջին թուղթն էր քաշում, նա համաներում էր ստանում, իսկ եթե դժբախտաբար նա քաշում էր «մահ» գրառմամբ թուղթը, ապա դատավճիռն իրականացվում էր։

Մի մարդ, ով ապրում էր այս երկրում, շատ թշնամիներ ուներ, որոնք բանսարկություն էին անում, ու հասան նրան, որ դատարան այս մադրուն մահապատժի վճիռ կայացրեց։ Դա էլ քիչ էր, նրա թշնամիները չէին ցանկանում ոչ մի հնարավորություն թոնել նրան փրկվելու։ Մահապատիժն իրականացնելուց առաջ գիշերը նրանք հանեցին արկղիկից «կյանք» գրառման թղթիկը ու տեղը դրեցին «մահ» գրառմամբ թուղթը։ Իսկ դա նշանակում է, որ ցանկացած թուղթ քաշելու դեպքում, նրան կգլխատեին։ Այսպես էին մտածում նրա թշնամիները։ Բայց նա ուներ ընկերներ, որոնց հայտնի էր դարձել թշնամիների գործած չարագործությունը։ Նրանք հասցրին զգուշացնել դատապարտյալին, որ արկղիկի մեջ երկու թղթերի վրա էլ գրված է «մահ»։ Ընկերները դժբախտին համոզում էին դատավորների առաջ բացահայտել թշնամիների արարքը, բայց նա թույլ չտվեց և պնդեց, որ դա գաղտնի պահելով՝ նրան ավելի շատ օգնած կլինեն։ Ընկերները մտածեցին, որ նա խենթացել է․․․ Առավոտյան դատապարտյալը՝ ոչինչ չասելով դատավորներին, հանեց թուղթն ու ազատ արձակվեց։ ՀԱՐՑ․ Ինչպե՞ս նրան հաջողվեց դուրս գալ՝ թվում է, թե այս անելանելի իրավիճակից։

Հանելով թուղթը, դատապարտյալը այսպես վարվեց․ արկղիկից հանեց թղթերից մեկը, և, ոչ ոքի ցույց չտալով, ծիծաղեց ու կուլ տվեց թուղթը։ Դատավորները՝ ցանկանալով ճշտել, թե որ թուղթն էր նա հանել, արկղիկից հանեցին մյուս թուղթը, որի վրա գրված էր «մահ»։ Հետևաբար, մտածեցին դատավորները, կուլ տված թղթի վրա գրված էր «կյանք» (Չէ՞, որ նրանք ոչինչ չգիտեին թշնամիների արարքի մասին)։
