Բոլոր ժամանակներում էլ ամուսնական զույգերը շտապել են իմանալ՝ երբ են ծնող դառնալու, կինը վայրկյան առաջ ուզել է պարզել՝ հղի՞ է, թե՞ ոչ: Բայց միայն վերջին տասնամյակներում դեղատներում հայտնվեցին թղթե ձողիկներ, որոնք կնոջ մեզի մեջ մտցնելով հնարավոր է պարզել՝ կինը հղի՞ է, թե՞ ոչ:
Պարզվում է, որ հղիությունը վաղաժամ պարզել փորձել են անգամ հին եգիպտացիները: Այս մասին առաջին վկայությունները հնագետները գտել են Կալսբերգի թողած պապիրուսում, որը գրվել է մ.թ.ա. 21-րդ դարում:
Պապիրուսում խոսվում է տարբեր հիվանդությունների հետազոտության և բուժման եղանակների մասին: Այնտեղ մանրամասն նկարագրվում է նաև կնոջ հղիությունն ու պտղի սեռը որոշելու մեթոդները: Այսպես` վերցրել են 2 պարկ, մեկի մեջ լցրել գարի, մյուսի մեջ՝ ցորեն: 2 պարկն էլ ամեն օր «ջրել են» այն կնոջ մեզով, ում մոտ հղիության կասկած կա: Եթե ցորենն ու գարին ծիլ տային, նշանակում էր` կինը հղի է: Գարու ծլարձակումը խոսում էր այն մասին, որ այս ընտանիքում արու զավակ լույս աշխարհ կգա, ցորենի ծլարձակման դեպքում՝ պետք էր սպասել դստեր ծնունդի:
Եթե հացահատիկները չծլեին, ուրեմն կնոջ մոտ հղիություն չկա:
1934 թ-ին գերմանացի բուսաբան Վալտեր Գոֆմանը հղիության հնագույն ճշտման մի փորձարկում իրականացրեց: Նա հողով լի 6 տարրա վերցրեց, դրանցից 3-ում գարի ցանեց, 3-ում` ցորեն: Տարրաներից 2-ն անընդհատ ջրեց հղի կնոջ մեզով, մյուս 2-ը ոչ հղի կնոջ մեզով, վերջին 2-ում պարբերաբար լցրեց սովորական ջուր: Ժամանակ առ ժամանակ սովորական ջուր լցնում էր բոլոր 6 տարրաների մեջ: Սովորական ջրով ջրվող տարաններում ցանած հացահատիկը ծիլ տվեց 6-7 օր անց: Ոչ հղի կնոջ մեզով ջրվող բույսերն սկսեցին աճել 10-14 օր անց, բայց սածիլներն հիվանդ էին և մի ամիս հետո չորացան: Հղի կնոջ մեզով ջրված սերմերը շատ արագ ծիլ տվեցին: Դրանց ձողունները շատ առողջ էին և արագ վերընձյուղվում էին:
