Լարսի անցակետի փակվելու արդյունքում հայաստանյան տնտեսվարող սուբյեկտները լուրջ վնասներ են կրում: Վրաստանով անցնող այս ճանապարհը, որը Հայաստանը ԵՏՄ-ին կապող հիմնական ուղին է, տարվա ընթացքում պարբերաբար փակվում է, հիմնականում ձմռանը՝ ձյան առատ տեղումների պատճառով և ամռան թեժ մթերումների սեզոնին՝ փլուզումների և հեղեղումների արդյունքում: Եղանակային պայմաններից բացի՝ զգալի բարդություններ են առաջ գալիս նաև բյուրոկրատական գործընթացներից:
Այնպիսի իրավիճակ է ստեղծվում, երբ Լարսի ճանապարհը չի կարող համարվել կայուն կապ ապահովող միջանցք, և արդյունքում առաջ է եկել այլընտրանքային ուղիների տարբերակները դիտարկելու հարցը, որը պետք է դառնա ԵՏՄ շրջանակներում տրանսպորտային քաղաքականության առջև ծառացած կարևոր խնդիրներից մեկը:
Պետք է ընտրել տրանսպորտային միջանցքի այնպիսի տարբերակ, որը կլինի առավել անվտանգ և քիչ ծախսատար: Բեռնափոխադրումների իրականացման համար Այլընտրանքային տարբերակներից մեկը Փոթիի նավահանգստի կիրառումն է, սակայն լաստանավերի միջոցով իրականացվող ծովային այս ուղին համեմատաբար ծախսատար է: Մյուս տարբերակը Աբխազիայով անցնող ուղին է, այդ թվում նաև՝ երկաթուղային ճանապարհը, սակայն վրաց-աբխազական հակամարտության պատճառով այն գործարկելը դեռևս անհնար է:
Ռուսաստան տանող ցամաքային այլընտրանքային մեկ այլ ուղի անցնում է Հարավային Օսեթիայով, սակայն այս ճանապարհի անվտանգ օգտագործման հարցում նույնպես բարդություններ կան՝ կապված ռուս-վրացական լարված հարաբերությունների հետ: Ուստի անհրաժեշտ է կա՛մ հասնել նրան, որ հնարավոր դառնա նշված այլընտրանքային ճանապարհներից որևէ մեկի գործարկումը շահավետ և անվտանգ պայմաններով, կա՛մ էլ ձեռնամուխ լինել միանգամայն նոր ուղիներ գտնելուն:
