Մաշկի քոր (pruritus cutaneus) հիվանդության միակ ախտանիշը քորն է՝ յուրօրինակ զգացում, որը մաշկը քորելու անհրաժեշտություն է առաջացնում։ Քորի ֆիզիոլոգիան դեռևս բավարար չափով ուսումնասիրված չէ: Այն առաջանում է համապատասխան ընկալող նյարդային ապարատի վրա որոշակի գրգռիչների ազդեցության ժամանակ։
Ամերիկացի գիտնականները մի շարք հետազոտություններ են կատարել և պարզել, թե ինչու է առողջության համար ինչ վտանգ է ներկայացնում քորել մաշկի քոր եկող հատվածը:
Գիտնականները մի այսպիսի փաստ արձանագրեցին. բանն այն է, որ քորի դեպքում ուղեղը սերոտոնին կարող է արտադրել, որի պատճառով տհաճ զգացողություններն ավելի ուժեղ են դառնում: Ուսումնասիրության արդյունքները ներկայացված են Neuron ամսագրում:
Հետազոտության հեղինակ Չժոու Չենը հայտնում է, որ ողեղը ստանում է ազդանշանները և արձագանքում դրանց` արտադրելով սերոտոնին նեյրոմեդիատորը, որն օգնում է հաղթահարել ցավը: Այդ նյութը, սակայն, հայտնվելով ողնուղեղում, այլ ճանապարհ է բռնում, նաև ցավի նեյրոնների փոխարեն ռեակցիայի մեջ է մտնում նյարդային բջիջների հետ, որի արդյունքում ավելի են ուժեղանում քորի զգացողությունը:
