Մեկ հայացքը մարդու ձեռքերին բավական է ախտորոշում կատարելու համար, ասում են մաշկաբանության ամերիյան ակադեմիայի մասնագետները: Եղունգներից կարելի է բացահայտել սակավարյունությունը, թոքերի հետ կապված խնդիրները և սնկային հիվանդություննները:
 
Եթե եղունգը դեղին է կամ շերտավորվում է, հնարավոր է` այն վարակված է սնկային հիվանդությամբ: Բացառված չէ նաև լյարդի, լիմֆատիկ համակարգի կամ թոքային որևէ հիվանդության առկայությունը:

Եղունգների տակ առկա սև բծերը խոսում են մաշկի քաղցկեղի` մելանոմայի բարձր հավանականության մասին: Մասնագետները խորհուրդ են տալիս նման բծեր հայտնաբերելու դեպքում անմիջապես դիմել բժշկի: Իսկ մատների ծայրերի չափերի մեծացման կամ եղունգների ծալվելու դեպքում, ամենայն հավանականությամբ, գրանցվել է թթվածնի պակաս, հետևաբար, սրտային կամ թոքային որևէ հիվանդություն կա: Ամենատարածված պատճառը թոքերի քաղցկեղն է: 

Ճաքճքած կամ փոսիկներով եղունգներ ունեն այն մարդիկ, ում մոտ կա փսորիազ, քրոնիկ դերմատիտ կամ արթրիտ: Եղունգների վրայի բծերը խոսում են ցածր ջերմաստիճանի ենթարկվելու, Ռեյնոյի հիվանդության, շաքարախտի անկայուն ընթացքի, թոքախտի, արյունատար համակարգի հիվանդությունների մասին:

Ծալված եղունգները կարող են կապված լինել վնասվածքի, ծնկապանակների խախտում ենթադրող  հիվանդության հետ: Հաճախ նման ախտանիշ հանդիպում է սակավարյունություն ունեցող մարդկանց մոտ: Երբ եղունգի մեծ մասը սպիտակ է, կարելի է կասկածել լյարդի ցիրոզ կամ շաքարախտ:
