Արյան փոխներարկման շնորհիվ բազմաթիվ կյանքեր են փրկվել: Սակայն երբեմն բավականին դժվար է լինում գտնել անհրաժեշտ քանակությամբ արյուն, որը բոլոր հատկանիշներով կհամապատասխանի հիվանդի արյանը:

Ինչպես հայտնի է, յուրաքանչյուր մարդու արյուն պատկանում է չորս տարբեր խմբերից մեկին: Բացի սրանից, կարևո՞ր է արդյոք, որ դոնորի և հիվանդի արյան ռեզուսները համընկնեն: Դա կախված է անտիգեներից, որոնք գտնվում են էրիտրոցիտների՝ մեր արյան բաղադրիչներից մեկի մակերեսին: Այս բացահայտումը նախորդ դարում արել է ամերիկա-ավստրիացի գիտնական Կարլ Լանդշտայները, որի համար էլ արժանացել է Նոբելյան մրցանակի: Քիմիկոս-իմունաբանը իր հետազոտությամբ զգալիորեն նպաստել է վիրահատությունների ընթացքում շատ արյուն կորցրած հիվանդների համար դոնոր գտնելու ճիշտ ընտրությանը: Մինչև այդ պահը բժիշկներին և գիտնականներին չէր հաջողվել հասկանալ, թե ինչու նույն խմբին պատկանող արյունը չի համապատասխանում բոլոր հիվանդներին:

Ռեզուսի գործոնը բացահայտվելուց հետո համարվում էր, որ այն կարող է լինել միայն դրական կամ բացասական: Սակայն 1961թ. Ավստրալիայի հիվանդանոցներից մեկում հայտնվեց մի կին, որն Ավստրալիայի բնիկ ժողովուրդներից մեկի ներկայացուցիչ էր: Կնոջ արյունը հետազոտելուց հետո պարզ դարձավ, որ դրա ռեզուսի գործոնը տարբերվում էր ստանդարտից. ըստ լաբորատոր տեխնիկների՝ այն «զրոյական էր»: Էրիտրոցիտների մակերեսին առհասարակ չգտնվեցին անտիգեներ: Ինչպես պարզ դարձավ հետո, այդպիսի արյուն ունեցող մարդը դոնոր կարող է հանդիսանալ ցանկացած մարդու համար, իսկ ռեզուսի գործոնը էական նշանակություն չի ունենա: Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպությունը մեր մոլորակում դեռևս գրանցել է «զրոյական» ռեզուսով ընդամենը 11 մարդու: Նրանցից յուրաքանչյուրը արյուն է պահում հատուկ տարայում: Խնդիրը նրանում է, որ չնայած իրենց արյան փոխանցման բազմակողմանիությանը, «ոսկե արյան» սեփականատերերի համար դոնոր կարող են հանդիսանալ միայն հենց իրենք. ցանկացած այլ արյուն չի համապատասխանի: Այդ պատճառով նրանք պետք է արյան հավելյալ պաշար ունենան անակնկալ վիրահատությունների կամ դժբախտ պատահարների դեպքում:
