Ամերիկայի համար այս նոր վիրուսը տարածվում է և կարող է թերի ծնունդների պատճառ դառնալ: Այն կոչվում է Զիկա վիրուս և հիմնականում տարածված է Բրազիլիայի մեծ մասում ու Կենտրոնական Ամերիկայի հյուսիսում: Տարածվում է մոծակների միջոցով: Թեև մասնագետները մտածում էին, որ այն անվնաս է և միայն երկարատև գրիպ ու մկանային ցավեր է առաջացնում, բայց վերջերս Բրազիլիայի բժիշկները հայտնել են, որ այն կարող է նաև արատներ ունեցող երեխաների ծնվելու պատճառ դառնալ, որը կոչվում է միկրոցեֆալիա:
Դրա հիմնական ախտանիշը սովորականից փոքր ուղեղն է ու գլուխը: Նախկին տարվա համեմատ դեպքերի թիվը շատացել է Բրազիլիայում: Այն գնալով լուրջ խնդիր է դառնում հատկապես աղքատ տարածքների համար, որտեղ մոծակներին վերահսկելը շատ դժվար է:
Այժմ գիտնականները փորձում են հասկանալ, թե իսկապես կապ կա՞ Զիկա վիրուսի ու միկրոցեֆալիայի միջև: Քանի դեռ վստահ չեն, չեն ուզում անհանգստացնել մարդկանց: Լավ նորությունն այն է, որ մարդիկ միմյանց չեն վարակում: Միայն արևադարձային շրջաններում ապրող հատուկ տեսակի մոծակները կարող են այն տարածել: Դրանով նաև չեն վարակվում կենդանիները: Այս ամենը նշանակում է, որ պետք է նախապես պաշտպանված այցելել այդ բնակավայրերը, օգտագործել որոշ կանխարգելիչ միջոցներ:
