Ռուսաստանի Գիտությունների ակադեմիայի Մոսկվայի Նյութերագիտության և տեխնոլոգիայի ինստիտուտի գիտնականները և նրանց չինացի գործընկերները վահանակների արդյունավետությունը բարձրացնելու միջոց են գտել։ Սովորական մարտկոցը բաղկացած է երկու տեսակի ֆոտոբջիջներից՝ էլեկտրոնների դոնորից և ընդունողից, որն ընդունում է դրանք: Այդ շարժումը ստեղծում է էլեկտրական հոսանք: Նրանք մշակել և ավելացրել են ևս մեկ բաղադրիչ՝ բարդ օրգանական մոլեկուլ, որը կարելի է սինթեզել բավականին պարզից: Այն կլանում է արևի լույսը դոնորի և ընդունողի միջև սպեկտրի միջանկյալ տիրույթում: Արդյունքում, ֆոտոէլեկտրական էֆեկտը գործարկվում է բոլոր երեք կիսահաղորդիչներում, սակայն լիցքակիրների համար ավելի հեշտ է շարժվել՝ լրացուցիչ բաղադրիչը ծառայում է որպես կամուրջ, որի վրայով էլեկտրոնների համար ավելի հեշտ է «անցնել», քան դոնորից անցնել ընդունող: Միաժամանակ կրճատվում են էներգիայի կորուստները, ինչի արդյունքում հնարավոր է դառնում արևի փոխակերպման արդյունավետությունը հասցնել 18%-ի (նախկին 16%-ի համեմատ)։

Բացի այդ, հավելումը մեծացրել է վահանակների դիմադրությունը արևի լույսի և ջերմաստիճանի նկատմամբ, ինչը թույլ է տալիս դրանք ավելի քիչ հաճախ փոխարինել նորերով։ Մշակողները հույս ունեն, որ իրենց տեխնոլոգիան կօգնի աշխարհում արևային էներգիայի զարգացմանը։
