Միջնադարյան Եվրոպայի՝ կոյուղի չունեցող քաղաքները փոխարենն ունեին հաստափոր պարիսպներ ու պաշտպանողական փոս, որը լցված էր ջրով։ Հենց այդ փոսն էլ համատեղության կարգով կատարում էր կոյուղու գործառույթը, քանի որ պարիսպների վրայից դրա մեջ էին լցնում մարդկային կենսագործունեության արգասիքները։
Ֆրանսիական որոշ ամրոցների դիմաց մարդկային կղանքի թմբերն այնքան էին բարձրանում, որ պատերի բարձրությունը ստիպված բարձրացնում էին, ինչպես դա արվեց նույն Փարիզում, որի ամրոցի պատերի մոտի արտաթորանքների սարն այնքան էր բարձրացել, որ կարող էր հետ թափվել քաղաք, էլ չխոսենք նրա մասին, որ թշնամու պաշարող զորքը կարող էր օգտագործել այն պաշարային աշտարակների տեղ։
Քաղաքների փողոցներն այնքան կեղտոտ էին, այդ թվում նաև կղանքով, որ բացարձակ անհնար էր անձրևոտ եղանակներին փողոց դուրս գալ։ Հենց այդ ժամանակներում գերմանական որոշ քաղաքներում ի հայտ եկան փայտյա տրեխները, առանց որոնց պարզապես անհնար էր փողոց դուրս գալ։

Մոտավորապես այսպիսի տեսք ունեին միջնադարյան ասպետները, ում հասակը հազվադեպ էր գերազանցում 160 սանտիմետրը։ Այն ժամանակներում եվրոպացիները, որպես կանոն, փոքրամարմին էին, իսկ ասպետների դեմքերը հաճախ այլանդակված էին լինում օսպայից, որով հիվանդանում էին գրեթե բոլոր եվրոպացիները։ Դե իսկ ասպետական սաղավարտի ներսում երկար ու կեղտոտ մազերի, ինչպես նաև արիստոկրատական հանդերձանքի ծալքերի մեջ վխտում էին ոջիլներն ու տզերը։
Ասպետների բերանից այնպիսի գարշահոտ էր գալիս, որ ժամանակակից կանանց համար նման «սրտակերի» կողքին կանգնելն իսկական փորձություն կլիներ, էլ չխոսենք համբուրվելու մասին։ Եվրոպացիներն այդ ժամանակ ատամներն ընդհանրպես չեն մաքրում, իսկ նրանց կերակրացանկում կար ամեն ինչ, և այդ ամենի հետ նրանք խմում էին կծված գարեջուր, իսկ դեզինֆեկցիայի համար սխտոր էին ծամում։
 
Բացի դրանից, ամեն հերթական արշավի ժամանակ ասպետը կարող էր օրեր շարունակ չհանել իր զրահները, որոնք ցանկության դեպքում անգամ ստիպված էր հանել՝ միայն կողմնակի օգնություն ներգրավելով։ Ասպետական զրահների մեջ մտնելու գործընթացը կարող էր ժամ և ավել տևել։ Բնականաբար, իր բոլոր բնական կարիքներն ասպետը հոգում էր հենց զրահի մեջ։ Դրա համար հաճախ ասպետները գերադասում էին միայն օղակազրահ կրել, իսկ բուն երկաթյա զրահը կրում էին մարտից անմիջապես առաջ, որովհետև բացի նրանից, որ դրանում ստիպված պետք է հոգային իրենց կարիքները, այն նաև շատ ծանր էր։
