1920 թվականի հունվարի 31-ին տեղի ունեցավ Երևանի ժողովրդական համալսարանի բացումը

Անի Ասլանյանը ֆեյսբուքյան իր էջում գրում է.
1919թ.-ի մայիսի 16-ին Հայաստանի Հանրապետության նախարարների խորհուրդը Երևանում համալսարան հիմնելու վերաբերյալ որոշում է ընդունում: 1920թ.-ի հունվարի 31-ին Ալեքսանդրապոլի (այժմ` Գյումրի) առևտրային դպրոցի շենքում մեծ շուքով կատարվում է Հայաստանի համալսարանի բացման հանդիսավոր արարողությունը:
Համալսարանի բացմանը մասնակցում էին ինչպես հանրապետության ղեկավարները, այնպես էլ բազմաթիվ հյուրեր արտասահմանից:Համալսարանում դասերի մեկնարկը տրվեց նշանավոր հայագետ Ստեփան Մալխասյանցի` 1920թ.-ի փետրվարի մեկին կարդացած դասախոսությամբ: Առաջին ուսումնական տարում համալսարանն ուներ մեկ` պատմալեզվաբանական ֆակուլտետ, 262 ուսանող և 32 դասախոս:
Ի պատիվ համալսարանի առաջին ռեկտոր Յուրի Ղամբարյանի` պետք է նշել, որ հիմնադրման առաջին իսկ տարում համալսարանում դասախոսելու հրավիրվեցին արտասահմանյան բուհեր ավարտած, մանկավարժական ու գիտական աշխատանքի փորձ ունեցող այնպիսի անվանի մասնագետներ, ինչպիսիք էին Հակոբ Մանանդյանը, Մանուկ Աբեղյանը, Ստեփան Մալխասյանցը և ուրիշներ:
Հայաստանում խորհրդային կարգերի հաստատումից հետո, ՀՍՀ առաջին լուսժողկոմ Աշոտ Հովհաննիսյանի «Երևանի համալսարանի վերակազմության մասին» հրամանով 1920թ.-ի դեկտեմբերի 17-ին Հայաստանի համալսարանը վերանվանվեց Երևանի ժողովրդական համալսարան: Երևանում վերաբացված կրթօջախի ռեկտոր ընտրվեց հայագետ, պրոֆեսոր Հակոբ Մանանդյանը:
Նախորդ դարասկզբի 20-ական թթ. համալսարանը գործում էր Աստաֆյան (այժմ` Աբովյան) փողոցում գտնվող ուսուցչական սեմինարիայի` սև տուֆով կառուցված երկհարկանի շենքի առաջին հարկում: Ժողովրդական համալսարանում գործում էր ընդամենը երկու ֆակուլտետ` Հասարակագիտական և Բնագիտական: Իսկ արդեն 1921թ.-ի հոկտեմբերից համալսարանն ուներ հինգ ֆակուլտետ` Բնագիտական, Արևելագիտական, Տեխնիկական, Մանկավարժական և Խորհրդային շինարարության:
Այնուհետև Բնագիտական ֆակուլտետը վերաձևավորվեց գյուղատնտեսականի, իսկ
1922թ.-ի մարտին բացվեց նաև Բժշկական ֆակուլտետը: Կառավարության 1923թ.-ի հոկտեմբերի 20-ի որոշման համաձայն` ժողհամալսարանը վերանվանվեց պետական համալսարան: Ըստ այդմ` բարձրացավ Մայր բուհի կարգավիճակն ու պատասխանատվությունը, ինչպես նաև խստացան կրթօջախին ներկայացված պահանջները:
Համալսարանի ղեկավարությունը հատուկ ընտրությամբ աշխատանքի հրավիրեց արտասահմանյան բուհեր ավարտած և մի քանի օտար լեզուների տիրապետող, մանկավարժական հարուստ փորձ ունեցող գիտնականների:
