Վաշինգտոնում՝ Սպիտակ տանը, փետրվարի 7-ին տեղի էր ունեցել Փաշինյանի հանդիպումը Միացյալ Նահանգների փոխնախագահ Վենսի հետ։ ՀՀ կառավարությունը մեկ լուսանկար և լակոնիկ հաղորդագրություն էր տարածել, թե «քննարկվել են Հայաստան-ԱՄՆ երկկողմ հարաբերություններին, ինչպես նաև տարածաշրջանային օրակարգին վերաբերող հարցեր»։ Մամուլում այդ հանդիպումից հետո բազմաթիվ վարկածներ էին շրջանառվում, ընդհուպ նշվում էր, որ հանդիպում կազմակերպելու համար հայկական կողմը դիմել է Թուրքիայի միջնորդությանը։ Նշվում էր նույնիսկ, որ հանդիպմանը մասնակցել է ԱՄՆ-ում Թուրքիայ դեսպանը։


Երեկ խորհրդարանում Փաշինյանը փորձել է ցրել այդ կասկածները, հայտարարել է, թե Սպիտակ տանը «նախապես հանդիպումները նախատեսված չէին», և հընթացս հանդիպում է ունեցել ԱՄՆ փոխնախագահ Ջեյ Դի Վենսի հետ։ «Կազմակերպվեց հանդիպումը, այսպես ասած, չնախատեսված կարգով։ Բավական երկար է տևել», - ասել է նա, հավելել, թե հանդիպումը «1+3 ձևաչափով» է եղել, այսինքն՝ տետատետ խոսակցություն չի եղել, պատվիրակության անդամներից ևս ներկա են գտնվել։ Ըստ Փաշինյանի՝ հայկական կողմից ԱՄՆ-ում Հայաստանի դեսպանն է մասնակցել, կառավարության աշխատակազմի արտաքին կապերի վարչության պետը, իր մամուլի խոսնակը:

ԱԳ նախարար Արարատ Միրզոյանը հանդիպմանը չի մասնակցել, Փաշինյանն էլ չի պարզաբանում, թե ինչու։ Թեպետ, հենց արտգործնախարարի մասնակցությունն ավելի տրամաբանական կլիներ։ Ամեն դեպքում, Վենսի հետ ձախողված հանդիպումը, ինչպես և սպասվում էր, գործող իշխանությունը փորձում է ներկայացնել իրեն ձեռնտու հունով։ Թե որքանո՞վ դա կհաջողվի, ցույց կտա ժամանակը։
