Ի Քրիստոս հանգուցյալ կաթողիկոս-պատրիարք Իլիա երկրորդը Վրաստանում վայելում էր իսկական սեր և հեղինակություն՝ կրոնական վերածննդի գործում իր հսկայական ավանդի, հակամարտությունների ժամանակ ունեցած խաղաղարար դերի և ազգի «կնքահոր» կարգավիճակի շնորհիվ:

Վրաց ժողովրդի մեծ մասի համար, երջանկահիշատակ կաթողիկոս-պատրիարքը դարձել էր ազգային միասնության, հոգևորականության և քաղաքական գործիչներից վեր կանգնած բարոյական հեղինակության անվիճարկելի խորհրդանիշ:
Իլիա երկրորդը հոգևոր առաջնորդություն ստանձնեց դեռևս խորհրդային ժամանակաշրջանում (1977թ.), իսկ ԽՍՀՄ փլուզումից հետո նպաստեց ուղղափառության վերադարձին վրացիների կյանք՝ կառուցելով և վերականգնելով հարյուրավոր եկեղեցիներ։
2008թ. ի վեր, յուրաքանչյուր ընտանիքում անձամբ մկրտել է երրորդ և հաջորդ երեխաներին՝ դառնալով ավելի քան 50,000 վրացի երեխաների կնքահայր, այդ կերպ ավելի մտերմանալով բազմաթիվ ընտանիքների հետ։

Վրաստանի համար դժվարին ժամանակներում նա հենարան ու ազգային միասնության խորհրդանիշ էր հանդիսանում՝ ուղղափառությունը հաջողությամբ համատեղելով վրացական ինքնության հետ:

Կաթողիկոս-պատրիարք Իլիա երկրորդն առաջնորդեց Վրաց ուղղափառ եկեղեցին շուրջ 50 տարի՝ դառնալով երկրի պատմության ազդեցիկ առաջնորդներից մեկը:
