«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

«Շքանշան» (օրդեն) բառն իր արմատներում ունի լատիներեն «ordo» բառը, որը նշանակում է «շարք, համայնք», և դա բացարձակ առանձին հասկացություն է, նույն մեդալը չէ։ Առաջին նման իրերով պարգևատրումը հայտնվել է միջնադարյան Եվրոպայում՝ ասպետական եղբայրություններում, որոնք միավորում էին մարտիկների՝ հաճախ կապված վանական ավանդույթներով: Այդ էլիտար հասարակությունների անդամները սկսել էին կրել հատուկ տարբերանշաններ՝ շքանշաններ, որոնք խորհրդանշում էին իրենց անդամակցությունը այդ համայնքին, կարգին: Ընդ որում, շքանշաններն ունեին թանկարժեք շղթաներ, կապիչներ, կրծքազարդեր և ժապավեններ, որոնք ցույց էին տալիս դրանց տիրոջ կարգավիճակն ու քաջությունը: Ժամանակի ընթացքում «շքանշան» սկսել են տալ ոչ միայն բուն համայնքների անդամներին, այլ նաև այլոց։ Բայց անգամ ասպետական դարաշրջանի անհետացումից հետո շքանշանների շնորհման կարգը պահպանվել է, այն է՝ դրանք տրվում են միայն բարձր դասի մարդկանց, սակայն դրանք դարձել են վաստակի ճանաչման պետական խորհրդանիշներ։ Շքանշաններ սկսել են շնորհել այն անձնավորություններին, ովքեր նկատելի հետք են թողել տվյալ պետության պատմության մեջ։

Մինչև 19-րդ դարը շքանշանի շնորհումը հաճախ ուղեկցվում էր ոչ միայն բուն շքանշանի հանձնմամբ, այլ նաև իրական արտոնություններով՝ դրամական վճարումներից մինչև ազնվականության կոչման իրավունք, երբեմն նույնիսկ ժառանգական: Այնուամենայնիվ, բարձր կոչում չունեցող հասարակ զինվորի համար գործնականում անհնար էր նման պարգև ստանալը։

Ռուսաստանում շքանշանները հայտնվել են Պետրոս I-ի օրոք և պահպանվել նույնիսկ հեղափոխությունից հետո՝ խորհրդային ժամանակաշրջանում։ Լենինի, Հոկտեմբերյան հեղափոխության կամ Կարմիր դրոշի շքանշանների նման մրցանակները դարձել են պետությանը հատուկ ծառայությունների ճանաչման խորհրդանիշներ։ Սակայն ԽՍՀՄում մեդալների և շքանշանների տարբերությունը որոշ չափով լղոզված էր, և երկու պարգևներն էլ համարվում էին պետական բարձր պարգևներ։

Հայաստանում ներկայում սահմանված են հետևյալ պետական շքանշանները.

Հայրենիքի շքանշան, Փառքի շքանշան, «Տիգրան Մեծ» շքանշան, «Մարտական խաչ» շքանշան, Սուրբ Վարդան Մամիկոնյանի շքանշան, Սուրբ Մեսրոպ Մաշտոցի շքանշան, Պատվո շքանշան, «Հայրենիքին մատուցած ծառայությունների համար» շքանշան, Բարեկամության շքանշան:

Հետաքրքիր է, որ շքանշանները երբեք չեն արմատավորվել մի քանի երկրներում, օրինակ՝ ԱՄՆ-ում: Պարգևատրման այդ համակարգը մերժվել է ի նշան ֆեոդալական Անգլիայի ավանդույթների խզման, որից Ամերիկան անջատվել էր 18-րդ դարի վերջին:

Ներկայում անհնար է միանշանակ ասել, թե ո՞րն է ավելի հեղինակավոր՝ մեդալը, թե շքանշանը։ Ամեն ինչ կախված է կոնկրետ դրա նշանակությունից և այն հանգամանքներից, որոնց պարագայում այն տրվում է: Այնուամենայնիվ, շքանշաններն ավելի հաճախ կապված են որոշակի ֆինանսական արտոնությունների հետ:
