Ինչպես հակազգային, այնպես էլ կեղծ հայրենասիրության ոլորտից է շարունակ աղաղակել այն փաստի մասին, որ միայն աղքատների երեխաներին են ուղարկում պատերազմ․․․ Մարդկության ամբողջ պատմության ընթացքում այդպես է եղել բոլոր երկրներում, այդպես է նաև այսօր բոլոր քաղաքակիրթ համարվող երկրներում, որտեղ օրինական պայքար է մղվում ցանկացած օրինախախտման դեպքում և որը, այսինքն՝ օրինական պայքարը, պարզապես գոյություն չունի մեր երկրում։ Ֆրանսիական բանակում Ֆրանսիացիները շատ քիչ են։ Այնտեղ ծառայում են այլ երկրներից վարձված օտարեկրացիներ։ Այս հանգամանքն էլ համարվում է այս երկրի բանակի ամենախոցելի հատկանիշներից մեկը, քանզի օտարը չի կռվի անձնազոհորեն․․․ Ընդհանրապես, ցանկացած պետության կամ հասարակության բուն գոյությունը պայմանավորված է ազնիվ, իրենց քրտինքով ապրող, իրենց ընտանիքներին նվիրված մարդկանցով։ Եթե դեռ կա մեր պետությունը կամ մեր հասարակությունը, դա նշանակում է, որ մեր մեջ դեռ կան նման մարդիկ, որ դեռ բոլոր ազնիվ ու աշխատասեր մարդիկ չեն արտագաղթել երկրից․․․ ԵՎ ահա այս պարզ, այս հիանալի մարդկանց երեսին շարունակ շպրտել, որ դուք աղքատ եք, անձեռնհաս եք, միայն ձեզ են տանում պատերազմ, մեղմ ասած, չափազանց խոցելի և վիրավորական է նրանց համար։ Դրա փոխարեն պետք է ամեն ինչ անել, որ պետությունը ըստ արժանվույն գնահատի այդ մարդկանց ծառայությունը, քանզի երբ նրանք պետության կանչով մեկնում են սահմաններ, նրանք ամենևին չեն մտածում, որ դրա պատճառն իրենց աղքատությունն է․․․ Նրանք պարզապես գիտակցում են, որ դա իրենց պարտավորությունն է․․․ որը սակայն, չեն գիտակցում իշխանավոր կոչված միջակությունները և սրանց ենթակա հասարակության գերակշիռ մասը․․․
