Սթիվեն Հոքինգը 21 տարեկան էր, երբ նրա մոտ հայտնաբերվեց շարժողային նեյրոնների խանգարում։ Այն ժամանակ բժիշկները նրա համար ընդամենը մի քանի տարվա կյանք կանխատեսեցին։
Այժմ նա 72 տարեկան է և ժամանակակից աշխարհի առաջատար ֆիզիկոսներից մեկը, Քեմբրիջի համալսարանի պրոֆեսոր, սև խոռոչների հետազոտող և «Ժամանակի կրճատ պատմությունը» գրքի հեղինակ։

Հաշմանդամության մասին
Իմ խորհուրդը մյուս հաշմանդամ մարդկանց հետևյալն է. կենտոնացեք այն ամենի վրա, ինչը Ձեր հաշմանդամությունը չի սահմանափակում անել, և մի ափսոսացեք այն ամենի համար, ինչն անընդունակ եք անել։ Հաշմանդամ մի եղեք ո՛չ ոգով, ո՛չ էլ ֆիզիկապես։
Առաջնահերթությունների մասին
Իմ նպատակը պարզ է. տիեզերքի ամբողջական ճանաչողությունը. ինչու է այն այնպիսին, ինչպիսին կա, և ինչու այն գոյություն ունի առհասարակ։
Ազատ կամքի մասին
Ես նկատել եմ, որ նույնիսկ այն մարդիկ, ովքեր պնդում են, թե ամեն ինչ նախասահմանված է, և որ մենք ոչինչ անել չենք կարող այդ ամենը փոխելու համար, փողոցն անցնելուց առաջ նայում են իրենց կողքերը։

Առաջինը՝ հիշեք վերև նայել՝ աստղերին ու ոչ թե ներքև՝ Ձեր ոտքերին։ Երկրորդը՝ երբեք մի հրաժարվեք աշխատանքից։ Աշխատանքն իմաստ ու նպատակ է տալիս, և կյանքը դատարկ է առանց դրա։ Երրորդ՝ եթե դու բավականաչափ հաջողակ ես ու սեր ես գտել, հիշիր, թե որտեղ է այն և երբեք դեն մի՛ նետիր։

Տիեզերքի հիմնական կանոններից մեկն այն է, որ ոչինչ կատարյալ չէ։ Կատարելություն գոյություն չունի։ Առանց անկատարության ո՛չ ես, ո՛չ դուք գոյություն չէիք ունեն։
